1. Preparation

I strongly had to consider the courses that I still had to complete for my Bsc, which were only four. Therefore I had to look at the list with previously absolved courses from students in every country that I was interested in. Completing my courses was my first priority and only then cities in these countries were chosen by me. My country variety was quite random for an outsider but my goal was an exchange semester in a safe city and lots of opportunities for traveling.

2. Accommodation

I didn’t stay in a Uni accommodation, as it was unsure if exchange students would get a room there (they all did). But their rooms were much more expensive, outside of the city center and/or without the option for a studio, which was very important for me. Therefore I looked for private student accommodations in the city and was able to compare a couple. The process was pretty easy and straightforward. The city is also quite safe and I was completely comfortable with walking around alone during the night. The campus is quite streched out over Sheffield and it took me from 10 to 25 minutes to the various buildings.

3. Academic life at host university

The campus facilities were similar to WUs and have everything one needs. They also have Cafes, restaurants and a mini market in their student’s union, which is nice. The academic culture varies for every subject I had. They have more specific BAs and none like ours. They study Finance and Accounting or Economics for example. The students vary a lot and therefore the culture as well. Some classes engage with their professors while others would never. Every class had a lecture for 2 hours with a short break. One class had a weekly one hour workshop and the other two had one-hour seminars once every two weeks. And the courses had 10 ECTs each, and I was only allowed to take 3 classes. That was very different compared to WU I had Introduction to Finance and Asset Management (the lectures materials didn’t match the hard end-exam), Macroeconomic Policies as well as Applications of Operations and Supply Chain Management (with a great professor)

5. Every day life in the host country

The city was very walkable especially the city center. We took the tram only to go to IKEA or the Mall. The city is very safe and the is a lot a police during the night on the main party street. And one can easily walk home during the night. Sheffield has a couple museums, a bowling alley (in an arcade with various games), a huge mall, several cinemas, Tennis courts, and many more things to do. Kelham Island hosts events every other week and the city center often offers food or drink events.

6. Testimonial

I was traveling a lot through the UK and during my second last week I took my first ever solo trip which was so special to me. But of course I met so many amazing people who turned into great friends. I had the best time ever diving into a new culture and experiencing another university than my beloved WU. Ps. The Peak District is the best place in Sheffield.
