1. Preparation

I asked previous WU students about their housing options, and for course selection, I chose courses similar to those I had already taken at WU. I booked my flights about three months in advance to save money.

2. Accommodation

I took over a lease from previous tenants in an off-campus student residence, about a 10-minute walk away. It was very nice with a pool and gym, however, the hygiene wasn't great; I wish I had known that beforehand.

3. Academic life at host university

The campus had a gym, various food and drink options, and even a doctor. The culture was rather anonymous; people didn't know each other because it's a relatively large university. The teaching style was very similar to WU (Vienna University of Economics and Business), as the classes were relatively large and anonymous. I can recommend courses that you've already taken at WU, as they'll make things easier.

5. Every day life in the host country

Public transport was practically nonexistent, but the university provided bicycles, and everything was relatively close to the campus, so you didn't have to travel far. You felt safe everywhere, and you quickly became well-connected with the other exchange students. You didn't connect as much with the Americans there, unless you joined clubs. There were quite a few events on campus, especially for exchange students, and plenty of opportunities to play sports, such as the gym, tennis courts, and basketball courts. You could also borrow rackets and balls for free.

All in all, it was a very pleasant stay and exactly the kind of campus life you imagine in the USA to be. Highlights included the campus itself, the events and evenings spent with the other exchange students, and the proximity to many other great cities in the USA.
