1. Preparation

I booked my flight approx. 3 months before the start of the exchange. I have not heard of anybody taking the green travel alternative to Uppsala as it is too far and generally train tickets are way more expensive than the additional travel allowance you get through the Erasmus program. The IO of WU Vienna and the Law Department of Uppsala worked together very well and I received all necessary information on time - so if you check your mails regularly you will be ready to go!

2. Accommodation

Every exchange student is guaranteed a housing spot through the Uppsala Housing Office, which is very comvenient. I received my housing confirmation approx. 1,5 months before the start of my exchange. The housing through the Housing Office is a bit more expensive than what swedish students pay; Ive heard from people that secured their own, cheaper housing but Ive also heard from people who didnt get anthing and then were forced to live very far outside the city center. Depending on wheter you want to live alone or in a corridor there are a few options: Rackarbergsgatan: This is by far the best option if you want to live with other people in a corridor in my opinion. The rooms are clean and were renovated a few years ago, "Rackis" is close to the city center and very close to all the nations (approx. 10 minutes walk to most nations) and a grocery store is around the corner. I lived here and I would recommend it if you want to live in a corridor. Flogsta: Ive heard dissenting opinions about Flogsta - some were very happy, some were very unhappy to the point that they switched accommodation mid semester - I think Flogsta is a bit of a gamble. Additionally the rooms are not in a good shape and the whole building is a bit dark. Flogsta is a vibe that can be very fun but also very unfun. Klostergatan: I would reccommend this housing if you want to live alone. It used to be a hotel and then got renovated to beeing a student housing location. Rooms are well equipped, clean and the location is very central. Ive only heard good stories about it, but I think it is the most popular housing, so getting a spot is not guaranteed.

3. Academic life at host university

Uppsala University is the most prestigous Law school in Scandinavia as well as the oldest University in Scandinavia. Campus facilites are very well maintained, even though most of them are pretty old. Uppsala´s (Law) teaching style is called "problem-based learning". Basically the content is studied through application in cases rather than through reading books. I didnt have to buy any book for my semester abroad - all the cases we discussed were uploaded on Canvas. I chose my courses based on if I was able to transfer the credits to Austria - this might be different for everybody, depending on what courses you still have left at WU. The course registration took place way before applying for the "Feststellungsbescheid"; i heard that you dont always get your preferred course but if you really want to have a specific course you can write to the contact person and generally they allow you to get into your course of choice.

5. Every day life in the host country

Everybody in Uppsala is taking the bike when the weather allows it - I would get a bike as quickly as possible when getting there. I lived in in Rackis so in winter I just walked everywhere but people living in Flogsta had to take the bus. Public transportation is pretty good but also very expensive - if I remember correctly, a monthly ticket for public transport was 70 EUR. The safety situation in Uppsala is very good - also in Bars/ Clubs there are a lot of security people working there to ensure everything is safe; ive not heard that anybody felt unsafe during my visit. The leisure and sport situation really depends on the time of the year: In winter you cannot really do a lot of sports except for the gym...for gyms I can recommend Campus1477 or Nordic Wellness. A lot of nations offer sports activities so its worth to check that out; many nations offer innebandy, football, volleyball, etc...

6. Testimonial

It was the best time of my whole studies! Being in a different country and experiencing a different culture really is an incredible experience and I met so many nice people who Iam still in contact with, it is great. One of the best parts of Uppsala is the nations: the nations organize so many events and really enrichen the student experience in Uppsala - the city wouldnt be the same without the nations and they make Uppsala a unique and very student friendly place. I can happily recommend Uppsala to anybody and I will forever look back to this time with great memories, great new friends and as one of the most unforgettable chapters of my life.
