1. Preparation

Start planning as early as possible. For example, I organised my accomodation in September and October, which allowed me to relax afterwards. I only needed an ETA, which was approved within a few minutes. I travelled to London by plane.

2. Accommodation

I searched for accommodation on several websites. I would recommend checking the information sheet provided by the host university, as it usually contains accommodation recommendations. However, it is also worth contacting the accommodation providers directly, as they sometimes offer lower prices. I stayed in student accommodation at YourTRIBE Elephant & Castle. The location was very convenient because there were many public transport connections nearby. When choosing accommodation, I would pay particular attention to the location and make sure that it is in a safe area. Another tip is to apply for your Student Oyster photocard at least three weeks before the start of your exchange, as the application process can take some time. With this card, you can receive a 30% discount.

3. Academic life at host university

The teaching style was very good. The lecturers were generally more relaxed and approachable, which created a friendly atmosphere. Class sizes varied considerably: some courses had only around ten students, while others had up to 300. Overall, the other students were also very helpful and friendly. However, apart from the Welcome Days, I did not notice many events or activities specifically designed to help students connect. The Welcome Days were excellent, though, and provided a great opportunity to meet many other exchange students.

5. Every day life in the host country

I generally felt very safe. However, in some areas farther away from the city centre, the surroundings could feel a little less safe, especially at night. Public transport is quite expensive, but with a Student Oyster photocard, you can save 30% on eligible travelcards. There are plenty of social and leisure activities available. My student accommodation organised activities almost every day, so I did not participate in many additional events elsewhere. I also heard that the university has its own gym.

6. Testimonial

It was amazing! I traveled a lot, which I recommend to do it and not wait for the very end, where you have to do a lot of assignments. Go to a pub quiz, all the markets and another highlight was a chess pub (knightsclub), where you can connect with a lot of people as well.
