Austrian citizens staying under 180 days require no prior visa - simply present your UniAndes acceptance letter at airport immigration for the 90-day PID entry stamp, extendable online. Comprehensive international health insurance is mandatory for enrollment. Pack warm layers and rain gear; contrary to tropical expectations, Bogotá sits at 2,640 meters and apartments lack central heating.

2. Accommodation

Book temporary housing for your first week rather than renting unseen. Most exchange students choose between walking to campus from nearby high-rises in CityU or downtown, or living in safer, lively northern neighborhoods like Chapinero Alto, Rosales, or Quinta Camacho (a 25-40 minute commute). Shared apartments (coliving) found via student networks or local platforms offer great value, usually including 24/7 building security (portería). Unlike Vienna, expect lack of central heating and occasional water-rationing schedules.

3. Academic life at host university

UniAndes offers an exceptional campus nestled against the Monserrate hills, boasting world-class sports facilities, modern libraries, and lush green spaces. Academically, it differs sharply from Austrian universities: instead of a single high-stakes final exam, grades rely on continuous assessment - weekly case studies, frequent quizzes, active participation, and heavy group work. Professors are accessible and emphasize practical application. While some business courses run in English, solid Spanish is vital to integrate smoothly into team dynamics and classroom discussions.

5. Every day life in the host country

Daily life in Bogotá is vibrant, social, and defined by exceptional local warmth (amabilidad). The urban contrast with Vienna is striking: public transport relies heavily on TransMilenio buses or ride-hailing apps (Uber, Cabify, DiDi) rather than seamless subways. Sundays transform the capital with Ciclovía, opening major avenues exclusively to cyclists and runners. While violent crime is avoided by adhering to basic situational awareness (no dar papaya), keep valuables out of sight and use apps instead of hailing street cabs at night. Fresh fruit markets, vibrant café culture, and rich regional travel make it an unforgettable experience.

Bogotá served as the ultimate launchpad to explore South America, taking me across Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Peru, and Bolivia. It was a transformative chapter that broadened my perspective far beyond the classroom.
