When preparing for my exchange I contacted the other people that also went to groningen and we met up before the exchange so you are not totally on your own. I traveled to groningen by plane and did a few days of sight seeing in amsterdam before (i would recommend this if you have the time) but if you pan on going directly to groningen there are great ways to travel green by taking the train. Besides that there was not much preparation needed except doing all the steps in mobility online and signing up for the esn introduction week so you dont miss out on getting to know all the other students.
Finding a accomodation in the netherlands is super hard but i would recommend SSH housing. Me and all of my friends lived there and it was (for a student accomodation) really great. Most of us lived in cornus where you have your own room, bath and share the kitchen wit 7 other people. I really enjoyed my time there but it is no cheap, for 5/6 months you pay (rent+taxes) about 6000€. There is an other SSH housing that ist way cheaper and also closer to the city center but you dont have your own bathroom. Where the accommodation is located ids not that important as groningen is really safe and you can reach everything super quick by bike. Tip: If you plan on booking an ssh be super quick and treat it like a wu course registration
Groningen has a main University building in the city center and the Faculty of economics and business a bit more on the outskirt of town. If you study business and economics courses you are going to have your lectures at the Zernike Campus. The teaching style is a bit different from wu, you are going to have lectures and tutorials for each course and you need to register for both, but no worries it is not as stressfull as it is at WU. Courses I took that I would recommend are: Strategic Management, Cross Cultural Management and also Innovation management in multinational and Growth and development economics (the last two are a bit harder but I enjoyed them) An other personal tip would be to not take Design and Planing of Production. In my opinion one of the hardest courses I ever took. You have no real lectures but nearly every week an exam or presentation where the professors are very strickt, the final Exam is open book and unpredictable.
for the entire exchange
I really loved living in the netherlands. You need nearly no public transportation as you take your bike everywhere (i would recommend renting a swapfeeds bike), i felt like it was super safe and you can do so many things with your friends, explore the cities and all of the cute cafes, try out new sports at aclo and go visit other cities in the netherlands and belgium.
my exchange was the best time i ever had, i loved the city and all of the new friends i have made. Groningen might not be a big city but it has so much to offer, and you are never going to get bored! Enjoy every single day (even the rainy ones) because it is going to be over way faster than you think.
