1. Preparation

For the application process, I would advise future exchange students to focus on their motivation and commitment in their application. I also recommend not being shy about asking questions, in genreal it is good contacting the University of Calgary with any concerns. They are very helpful and respond very quickly. I also recommend making sure you have accommodation sorted out before you arrive, so that you can focus on other things. Another tip is to get in touch with other international students via social media or the university platform before you arrive in Calgary, so you can get to know people or simply discuss your preparations.

2. Accommodation

I initially applied for student housing, but when I was still on the waiting list at the end of July, a fellow student at WU and I started looking for alternatives. We found an Airbnb about 20 minutes away from the university, which was quite nice. But I would recommend everyone try to get into the student residence and, if that doesn't work out, look for accommodation within walking distance of the university. Unfortunately, the public transportation system is not the best, and as soon as it snows, some buses don't run or have to take different routes.

3. Academic life at host university

I think the campus structure and in general the University of Calgary are really good. At first, it's a bit difficult to find your way around the large campus, but after a few days, it's very easy to find your classrooms. In addition, everyone is extremely friendly and you can always ask someone if you get lost. In contrast to Austria and Europe, the teaching style is very relaxed. You feel that the professors really care about you and they try to support you with any problems you may have. However, the courses vary greatly and, as at any university, you have to be lucky with your professors. Overall, though, I can say that I had almost only positive experiences in the courses and really enjoyed my time at Ucalgary.

5. Every day life in the host country

As mentioned briefly earlier, public transportation is unfortunately not the best, as buses in particular tend to run irregularly. In contrast, the train system is quite good, and you can reach downtown in 25 minutes by train. I never felt uncomfortable during my time in Calgary, as people are generally very friendly and open. In addition, the university offers many opportunities to make friends, especially at the beginning, and there are always events to participate in throughout the semester. Besides, the university also offers an extensive sports program, and I am sure that there is a sporting activity for everyone.

6. Testimonial

The semester abroad at the University of Calgary was one of the best times of my life. I made some great friends, got to know many places in Canada, and learned a lot about the people and culture. I can only recommend to everyone to spend a semester abroad in Canada, especially in Calgary. You can be in the mountains within an hour and there are so many opportunities for outdoor activities. Everyday life at the university was very varied and fun. Furthermore, I was able to take away many things from the courses I had not only for my studies, but also my future own general. I am extremely grateful for the time at the University of Calgary and hope that many other students will be able to have the same great experience as I did.
