The most important part of the application process is to make sure you attend the grant session and that you start preparing everything in time. Do not underestimate how long things like selecting courses, finding accommodation and figuring everything out can be. The application process for the grant can be a bit confusing, so if you have friends who will also go on exchange, don't be afraid to speak to one another and exchange information, moreover whenever you have a doubt, email the international office and they will be very helpful.
Finding accommodation in Amsterdam can be tough. I have heard all kinds of experiences, from people who easily found something through the university website to people who hopped around places for months, so make sure you start looking in time and inform yourself about scams. I stayed at The Social Hub Amsterdam City, where it is often easier to find a room, however the price is extremely high. However, the area (Oost) is really nice, safe and well-connected. Even though it is about 35 min away from the university, the center is only 2 metro stations away.
Academic culture in The Netherlands is definitely very different and it can be tough to get high grades. Here 10 is reserved for exceptional work, so most students will be very happy with a 7 or 8, which can definitely be discouraging at the beginning. Overall, the university does offer a good range of activities. I did not participate in so many, but I could always see a good offer. The campus infrastructure is good, especially the newer buildings. Older buildings are not so nice, but are functional regardless.
for the entire exchange
Public transport in Amsterdam is good and relatively well connected, however, it can get very expensive. Because of this, most people bike. Regarding safety, overall the city is quite safe, but I did witness more "petty crimes" like shoplifting or throwing fireworks on the streets than in Vienna. There is definitely a lot to do in the city and many places to travel nearby, as well as a wide variety of events to attend. It is also easy to access sports facilities and the university offers some courses as well, however, overall these activities tend to be more expensive than in Vienna.
Overall, my exchange experience was great. It allowed me to really get to know a new city, to get outside my comfort zone and move, try new things and get accustomed to a new culture. It allowed me to meet many great people and create amazing experiences. It allowed me to learn a lot about myself and to become more confident in my skills.
