I was living in the German House which is on Campus. I really recommend living there because it’s much cheaper than living in a student dorm on campus; plus you don’t have to get the meal plan. The German House is a house on campus only for german speaking students and you share a bathroom for men and women and a big kitchen. I always felt safe during the night. There is a lot of police driving around and you have a lot of SafeZone Spots in the campus area.
The campus infrastructure is pretty good. You can walk everywhere in <30 mins. There are also buses to get around campus which are free for students. The academic culture is quite the same compared to WU. Everyone’s ambitious to get the best grades. I had only easier courses which I would say are kind of the same workload as at WU.
for the entire exchange
Public transport in Lexington is free for students. (Only bus available) Safety situation is very good, UK has its own police department. I went to Chicago and Atlanta for a weekend trip. I also enjoyed one weekend in Miami and visited family in Washington DC. Flying out of Lexington is sometimes expensive, but there‘s also the Cincinnati Airport in 1.5h distance by car. I went to almost all sport events from UK. All besides Football and Basketball are free. Women’s Volleyball, Men’s & Women’s Soccer. There are 2 gyms on campus one is north and one is south, both very good and well equipped.
Overall, I really recommend going to Lexington, Kentucky for a semester abroad. Especially if you like college sports, both watching and playing it. I really enjoyed travelling around the US and watching all the college sports events. I think every semester abroad has its ups and downs, but you’ll meet a lot of new people and make new friends and have a great time. Go Cats!
