1. Preparation

Overall, the preparation for an exchange semester at CBS is quite straightforward if you follow the guidelines provided by the International Offices of both WU and CBS. All required information is shared well in advance, which makes the planning process much easier. The communication with the International Office at CBS was always smooth and efficient, as they responded to inquiries within a short period of time. It is especially important to make sure that you have the required C1 English certificate ready in time. Also, take some time to choose your courses carefully and check that there are no overlaps in the schedule, as this can save you a lot of stress later on.

2. Accommodation

I received an offer for a private shared apartment through CBS Private Housing, which I decided to accept. I lived with three other girls in Sydhavn, which is approximately 20 minutes away from the main campus by bike or metro. Since it is very difficult to find a shared apartment in Copenhagen, I was extremely happy and grateful for the offer from CBS, as it saved me a lot of time and helped me avoid potential scams in Facebook groups. CBS is located in Frederiksberg, so living close to the campus would be the most convenient option. However, even though Sydhavn was a bit further away, I really liked the location, as I enjoyed biking through the city and always felt safe, even at night. Copenhagen is generally a very safe city to live in. You should expect relatively high rent prices, usually in the range of €800 - €1,200, even for student housing options and smaller rooms.

3. Academic life at host university

The main campus buildings at CBS are all within a short walking or biking distance of around 10 minutes. Most of my classes took place in the main building, which also includes the main library and cafeteria, making everyday campus life very convenient. In general, all larger CBS buildings offer study areas and cafeterias, so even during busier exam periods it is easy to find a quiet place to study. I also enjoyed studying at the Black Diamond Library, which I would definitely recommend visiting. When selecting courses, the exam formats are already visible in advance, such as home assignments, written sit-in exams, or oral exams. In my courses, class participation did not count towards the final grade. The teaching style was very interactive and discussion-based, which I really enjoyed. Since many CBS students work alongside their studies and attendance is usually not mandatory, classes were sometimes less crowded.

5. Every day life in the host country

Copenhagen’s infrastructure is excellent for biking, and no matter the weather, you will always see people cycling or running around the city. I rented a bike from Swapfiets (an alternative would be Donkey Republic) during my stay and biked almost every day, so I only had to use the metro a few times. However, the metro system is also very modern and easy to use with apps such as Rejsekort or DOT Tickets. Copenhagen offers a great work-life balance with a very active lifestyle. The options for sports and physical activities are extensive, and you can find opportunities for almost any sport. I especially enjoyed padel, pickleball, CBS Yoga, and the CBS Running Club. CBS also offers a wide range of student associations, so you will definitely find several interesting ones to join and meet new students with similar interests.

6. Testimonial

I highly recommend doing an exchange semester at CBS! Overall, I loved my time in Copenhagen, and it was definitely the highlight of my master’s studies. I was able to experience the hygge culture of Denmark and enjoyed everyday life in Copenhagen, one of the safest, most lively and beautiful cities. Alongside a great academic experience at CBS, I met so many wonderful students who made my exchange semester truly special.
