Learn basic vocabulary in spanish, not that many people speak english. Inform yourself in which part of the City you want to live. The university is in Chamberí / Malasana, however, other parts like Centro, La Latina and Lavapies are good neighbourhoods as well. Your Austrian E-Card is considered an European Health Insurance Card. If you don't have one, I would recommend getting one.
The university will send out pages you can use. Also talk to people from other Unis, I found my apartment through a friend who also did her semester abroad in madrid. I already added the best neighbourhoods before (Chamberí, Malasana...). I would recommend a shared student aparment, as you already meet people, who might even go to the same University. There is the option of student residences, they are far away from our university however and really expensive. That is why I would look for shared apartments.
Big gap between exchange students and spanish students. The campus is small, not that many spaces to spend time. The classes are 20-50 people, in most participation is required. You will most likely have midterms and then final exams at the end of the semester. Not every course requires attendance.
for the entire exchange
Public transport is 10€ a month for students under 27. You need to organize an appointment online (you will have to wait) or you can order the card beforehand. Consider, that it takes up to 3 weeks to be delivered!! There is so much to do in the city. CitylifeMadrid is a company that organizes events, trips etc., so have an eye out for them. The university has a football and rugby team. If you're into football, I recommend the Club Rayo Vallecano. They play in La Liga as well, the tickets however are much more affordable as Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. The city is very safe apart from pickpocketers. Be especially careful in public transport, touristy places, clubs and bigger events. Many people got there phones stolen while going out. For clubs I recommend: Mondo, Fabrik, El chapandaz, Teatro Kapital (touristy though), Bonded For bars I recommend: La potente, Tony 2 piano bar, the cavern irish pub, el fontana de oro
I had great roommates, that made my exchange perfect. That is why I recommend to live in a shared apartment, you may live with your best friends. Madrid in general is perfect to meet people, everyone is open to do something. The city has everything: Culture, beautiful architecture, nightlife and everyday activities.
