I extended my stay there since I had already spent the previous semester abroad. The selection process at the time was conducted through interviews led by Michael Theil. For traveling, you have several options. You can use Skyscanner to find the cheapest flights. To get to campus, the most convenient options are Amtrak, FlixBus, or Peoria Charter. I would recommend Peoria Charter, especially if you arrive with a lot of luggage. Up to two pieces are free, and the ticket costs around $45. They also offer multiple drop-off locations within Champaign. It’s a comfortable bus ride, and the best part is that it picks you up directly at the airport, making it the most convenient option overall.
There are several accommodation options available. On the Green Street Realty website, you can find sublease opportunities. By paying a one-time fee of $150, you can rent for a shorter period as well, even from students who are currently studying abroad. This is how I found my accommodation, and I’ve always had a positive experience with it. Another advantage is that you don’t have to sign a lease for the entire year.
The openness in the U.S., both from people and professors, is very noticeable, and it is also reflected in the classroom environment. Professors and fellow students are very approachable and supportive. Studying in the U.S. feels more enjoyable rather than a burden. Classes are highly practical, and active participation is expected — you are encouraged to ask questions and engage during lectures.
for the entire exchange
There are some opportunities in the surrounding area, but for a real vacation experience, it’s best to travel to Chicago or other major U.S. cities. In terms of safety, I personally didn’t experience any major issues. However, I did have packages that occasionally went missing or were opened. It also depends on where you live — generally, areas between 1st and 6th Street tend to be relatively safe. For sports, the best option is the Campus Recreation Center. It’s a huge gym where you can try a wide range of activities, from climbing and swimming to pickleball. Public transportation is quite reliable. Buses run regularly in a European-style system throughout the entire campus area.
Overall, my time abroad was an incredible experience. If you are looking for true openness, this is one of the best academic opportunities you can choose. Try, as I did, to make American friends — you can learn so much from them. Your professors will also encourage you to think openly, not only within the university but beyond its walls. It’s truly a life-changing experience. The university is very supportive as well — whenever you have a problem, they are always willing to help.
