1. Preparation

I would recommend first narrowing down the list of countries and then looking at experience reports from other students about those specific destinations. Depending on what matters most to you, these reports can provide valuable insights into whether a particular university is the right fit. It’s also very helpful to talk to people who have already completed their semester abroad. From the very beginning, I was in contact with the Incoming Student Service at Uppsala University, and I can imagine they can provide a lot of useful information as well, since they respond very quickly.

2. Accommodation

At Uppsala University, finding accommodation in a student residence is very straightforward. They provide all the necessary information, and the application process can be completed in no more than half an hour. Depending on your preferences, I would recommend Klostergatan, Flogsta, or Rackarbergsgatan. Flogsta is known for being very social—you’ll meet a lot of people there—although it tends to be less clean. Klostergatan is very nice, has its own small gym, and is located in the city center; however, people there tend to spend more time in their own rooms. Rackarbergsgatan offers a good mix of both: it’s social but also quieter, and it’s within walking distance of the city center. Uppsala is generally a very safe city, and I didn’t experience any problems at all.

3. Academic life at host university

The classes tend to be smaller rather than large, which creates a more personal and engaging learning environment. They are quite interesting and structured differently compared to those at WU. Lectures are often followed by discussion-based sessions, which really help deepen your understanding of the material. I took Corporate Finance, Sweden’s Economic Development, and Why Some Countries Are Rich. I would especially recommend the last two courses. Corporate Finance is quite challenging and requires a significant amount of studying.Don’t take it!

5. Every day life in the host country

Public transportation in Uppsala mainly consists of buses, but most people get around the city by bike. Uppsala is extremely safe — as a woman, I never once felt unsafe. There are also the student nations, and I highly recommend taking full advantage of everything they offer. Since Stockholm is so close, it’s definitely worth going on a few day trips there. Sigtuna, a very small but cute city, is also close by. There’s also a gym called Campus 1477 that offers student rates and includes a variety of classes as well.

6. Testimonial

My exchange was an incredible experience. I met new people very easily, and everyone was extremely friendly and welcoming. I especially loved the student nations — their lunches as well as the parties, particularly in Stockholm and at Värmlands Nation. Taking advantage of being in the north and traveling was a huge part of my exchange. I visited Oslo, Bergen, Copenhagen, and several other Swedish cities. My advice: say yes to everything — in the end, I didn’t regret a single thing.
