1. Preparation

First, I had to take an English test, so I completed the IELTS online. I didn’t prepare extensively—just spent a few days reviewing some free materials. Afterward, I applied for the Erasmus program following the guidelines provided by my university. I then flew with Ryanair to Eindhoven and took a one-hour train to Rotterdam.

2. Accommodation

I began my apartment search in May, utilizing various platforms including WhatsApp groups and Facebook. While the process was demanding at times, it ultimately proved successful — the key is to remain attentive and proactive throughout the search. My apartment was located near Blaak, which offered convenient access to the university via tram. The Kralingen area is also in close proximity to the university.

3. Academic life at host university

Here is a more formal version: The campus is quite large and offers plenty to explore. The food plaza provides a good variety of quality options, and the Hogeschool, located on the same campus, also has an excellent cafeteria. The student community is welcoming, particularly the international students. The teaching style places a strong emphasis on practical learning, with a focus on group work and individual assignments rather than traditional examinations. Students also have the flexibility to select courses with less exam-heavy assessment structures. I had only one course where an exam accounted for 60% of the final grade. My courses were as follows: Strategy of Innovation — Assessment was based on individual and group assignments, with no major exams. Organisation of Innovation — Consisted of substantial individual assignments, each with approximately one week to complete, alongside one group project. Validation and Pivoting — A highly practical course centered around developing a startup concept. Assessment involved four presentations in an intimate setting with one partner. I found this course particularly valuable. Leading Organisational Change — Assessed entirely through an individual assignment. Attendance was mandatory, though classes were held only once or twice. Sustainability and Business Ethics — A straightforward course with no mandatory attendance, consisting of one group assignment and one simple individual assignment.

5. Every day life in the host country

Rotterdam is a very safe city. In terms of activities, the city centre offers pleasant walks along the bridge and waterfront areas. Travelling to other cities is straightforward using the NS app, and Paris is also easily accessible via Eurostar at a reasonable price if booked in advance. Dining and Food: Mimosza Burger — Highly recommended for burgers. La Fuga — A great option for desserts. Noah's Bakery — Another excellent dessert spot. Markthal — A landmark food hall with a wide variety of quality food options. On Tuesdays and Saturdays, a large outdoor market takes place near Blaak in the city centre, offering fresh groceries at notably lower prices as well as a diverse range of food stalls. Community and Social Life: For those looking to connect with specific communities or cultural events, the following are worth noting: ASA — A community group catering to African students and residents. Arabs in Rotterdam — A community group for Arabic-speaking individuals. Habibi's Café — A cultural venue hosting spoken word poetry and live performances, with a strong events programme.

6. Testimonial

The experience facilitated many meaningful friendships, largely through attending various events and social gatherings. There was also great value in having moments of solitude, which offered the opportunity for personal reflection and self-discovery. Living in a new city was truly an enriching experience overall.
