1. Preparation

It is helpful to start preparing your application early and to carefully check all deadlines and required documents. Planning ahead makes the application process much less stressful and gives you enough time to organize important details such as accommodation and course selection. I recommend researching the partner university in advance, especially the course offerings and campus facilities, so you know what to expect academically and socially.

2. Accommodation

Start searching for accommodation as early as possible, as the Netherlands have a well-known housing shortage. Before my exchange, the host university offered a webinar on this topic, which I strongly recommend attending because it provides useful guidance and practical tips for finding housing. Accommodation is available in student residences on campus through SSH, which is where I stayed during my exchange semester.

3. Academic life at host university

Compared to WU Vienna, there were fewer on-site classes and a stronger focus on independent study at home. Many courses required continuous preparation and self-organized learning outside the classroom. Group work played an important role in several courses, and many assignments were completed in teams. The classes themselves were often interactive, with discussions, presentations, and active participation rather than traditional lectures. Overall, the teaching style felt more practice-oriented and participatory compared to WU Vienna.

5. Every day life in the host country

Public transport is very well organized and makes it easy to get around. However, I would strongly recommend getting a bike, as cycling is one of the most convenient and popular ways of transportation. I felt very safe during my stay and was comfortable moving around both during the day and at night. To build a social network, I highly recommend participating in the welcome week, as it is a great opportunity to meet other students and make friends. It is also worth checking out the university’s sports programs, which offer a wide range of activities and are a great way to stay active and meet new people.
