In order to get to Singapore, the easiest and quickest way is to book a flight. However, you must expect a long 12-hour flight with a layover, as there are very few direct connections from Vienna to Singapore. My advice is to book your tickets in advance and opt for a round-trip ticket, as one-way tickets tend to be more expensive. Regarding the visa, I would recommend attending an online briefing session hosted by NTU before the exchange semester, where you will be provided with all the necessary information about your arrival, housing, and visa matters. From my experience, the application process is easy and straightforward, since all I had to do was fill in my personal details and send them online. Besides that, you would have to preselect your desired courses some time in advance, even when the official course catalog is not yet posted (refer to the previous semester’s catalogs). For every course there was an implicit selection procedure, where you were only allowed to participate in a course if you satisfied the necessary prerequisites. Therefore, select courses that match your interests and degree program. However, you would be allowed to add some extra courses at a later stage if the initially selected options do not match your preferences. Overall, on the NTU platform you will receive clear guidance in due time on every necessary step you have to accomplish.
Accommodation is a huge benefit of this university. Almost every exchange student was able to receive a relatively cheap, well-maintained, and socially active student housing. Every student dorm, irrespective of number, is located on campus, therefore, you would live in close proximity to your lecture halls. Dorms are clean and tidy with a very active community of students who organize some group events on a weekly basis. Hence I do recommend to apply for this type of housing. Other than that, you can rent out an apartment outside the campus, however, it’s gonna cost more and location would be worse. Application process for student housing is straightforward: you just fill out a short questionnaire and submit it in due time.
NTU is a sport-oriented institution, where you can find activities of any kind. Participation is almost always free of charge, and you can attend training sessions whenever you’re willing to. And that’s a really nice opportunity to meet some cool local students with whom you can build some strong friendships. And, again, since everything is located within campus, you don’t spend much time getting to any of the sports facilities. Teaching style is quite similar to the one you get used to in Vienna. You attend lectures or something you participate in practical sessions (not relevant for business classes). At the end of the term you might expect a final exam, as well as, throughout the semester you would have to submit a couple of home assignments and group projects. But, overall, the teaching approach was satisfactory and I had no complaints about it.
for the entire exchange
Student life at NTU is extremely joyful and fulfilling. You can participate in various sports activities or you can actively engage in diverse student unions. Basically, you can always find some social arrangements that would be of interest to you. Moreover, as I already mentioned, those activities is the best way to meet your fellow exchange students and make some connections. Traveling around Singapore is also fairly easy due to convenient public transportation with buses and subway. You pay on a per-ride basis with the price depending on the length of your journey. However, keep in mind, that NTU is located on the very edge of the Singapore, therefore, it would require some time to get to the city centre (approx. 50 mins).
Incredible opportunity to meet amazing people from all around the world. And living on campus unites you ever more, allowing you to spend all day long doing some shared activities and collecting unforgettable memories! And, of course, traveling around Southeast Asia was another outstanding experience. I would never forget those memories, and I would be always dreaming of going back and reliving those moments again!
