1. Preparation

Tips for the application process at WU for future outgoing students Regarding the application process at WU Vienna University of Economics and Business, there is relatively little that can be actively influenced once your CV and academic record are fixed. Therefore, it is important to rank partner universities strategically and realistically based on your profile, past international experience, and language skills. In my case, applying to Bocconi University made the most sense, as I already spoke Italian and wanted to further develop my language skills while studying in an international environment. Tips for preparing your semester abroad (incl. travel choice) Traveling from Austria to Milan is very convenient. There are several comfortable train connections, which are a great option if you prefer a more sustainable way of traveling. Alternatively, direct flights from Vienna take less than 1.5 hours, making Milan easily accessible. Because of the short travel time, it is also relatively easy to return home during the semester if needed.

2. Accommodation

Accommodation search experience Finding accommodation in Milan can be somewhat challenging due to high demand and relatively high prices, especially at the beginning of the semester when many exchange students arrive. I would recommend starting the search early and using multiple channels such as university housing groups, personal networks, and social media. Accommodation type (student residence/private) I decided against applying for student dormitories at Bocconi University because places are quite competitive and the prices can also be relatively high. Instead, I searched for a private shared apartment. I was fortunate to find a room through Instagram via personal connections, which worked out very well. Location, safety, and proximity to the university Several neighborhoods are particularly popular among students. Areas such as Navigli, Porta Romana, and Porta Ticinese are all relatively close to the university and are vibrant areas where much of student life takes place. Living directly in the city center near Piazza del Duomo is not necessary and tends to be significantly more expensive. Tips I wish I’d known beforehand A key recommendation is to prioritize trusted sources or personal recommendations when searching for accommodation. Unfortunately, some students reported being scammed through online advertisements, so it is important to verify listings carefully before transferring any money. If possible, try to arrange a video call with the landlord or current tenants and avoid making payments before receiving proper confirmation.

3. Academic life at host university

Campus facilities, academic culture, and teaching style compared to WU The academic culture at Bocconi University differs in several ways from the experience at WU Vienna University of Economics and Business. Teaching at Bocconi is often highly case-based, with many courses built around discussing real business cases and applying theoretical concepts to practical situations. Another notable aspect is the frequent involvement of guest lecturers from industry, which provides valuable insights into real-world business challenges and professional perspectives. Students should also expect a significant workload throughout the semester. Compared to WU, exams at Bocconi can be quite demanding and tend to focus on detailed understanding of the course material, so consistent preparation during the semester is important. Course recommendations One course I would particularly recommend is Fashion and Luxury Management. Taking this course in Milan—a global hub for fashion and luxury industries—was a unique experience. The course provides interesting insights into an industry that many students are not usually exposed to during their regular studies. Another course I found very interesting was Change Management. While the course is quite demanding and requires substantial effort, it covers a highly relevant topic and offers valuable perspectives on organizational transformation and leadership in dynamic business environments.

5. Every day life in the host country

Public transportation Public transportation in Milan works quite well, especially compared to what one might expect in other Italian cities. The metro, tram, and bus network is reliable and easy to use. Students can purchase a monthly public transport pass for approximately €20, which is very affordable and convenient. That said, Milan is also a very walkable city, so I would recommend exploring it on foot whenever possible—it is a great way to discover different neighborhoods and enjoy the city atmosphere. Safety situation Overall, Milan is generally safe, but as in most large cities it is important to remain aware of your surroundings. At night, it is advisable to avoid walking alone through poorly lit or empty streets. In addition, pickpocketing can occur, especially in crowded areas and on public transportation, so keeping an eye on your belongings is important. Social and leisure activities Milan offers many opportunities for social and cultural activities. A popular weekend activity is visiting the vintage market held on Sundays in the Navigli area. The city is also well known for its shopping scene, diverse restaurants, and vibrant nightlife. In addition, student associations—particularly those connected to Bocconi University—organize a variety of events throughout the semester, which are a great way to meet other students. I can also recommend the Giorgio Armani museum! Sports options Sports options in Milan can unfortunately be relatively expensive. Gym memberships tend to cost significantly more than what students may be used to in Vienna, and there are fewer large parks suitable for running. Students who want to stay active should therefore expect to spend more money or plan ahead when looking for affordable sports options.
