1. Preparation

In general, it was very easy to figure everything out as you went there, because Aarhus University is very well organised. Course selection happened well before arriving in Aarhus, as well as the selection of accomodation through the University and other administrative necessities. Booking your mode of transport should obviously be done before. I liked looking into Aarhus and what it has to offer and what the program of the intro week looked like before, but other than that you will definitely figure it out there.

2. Accommodation

I chose to get accommodation through Aarhus University, so my search experience was very simple. I just signed up for it and stated my preferences, which is a part of the official housing process. After a couple weeks I was assigned my dorm, which one has to take. You only get one offer by Aarhus University. I lived in Skelager Kollegiet, which is pretty calm and a little bit further from the city centre. I had my own bathroom and shared my kitchen with three other danish people. I liked it a lot, because the area was also pretty and nice, but you have to be okay with taking the bus, which does not frequent as often as in Vienna, or biking uphill. In general, this dorm did not have the biggest community, compared to my friends' dorm experience, but overall I would say that dorms in Aarhus are not like in Vienna and everyone I know had a good experience with them. Many of the dorms are also more central. Some of the people I knew also lived in apartments which is definitely also an option, if you get assigned a dorm you do not like or that is too far out of the city, it might be more expensive but in my experience it worked out for everyone, most found it on Facebook. Dorms are also a good way to meet Danish people and in general to not be alone early on. Safety was never a problem for me, I always felt safe everywhere.

3. Academic life at host university

The Campus and it's facilities were very nice. I especially enjoyed the Royal Library. The academic culture is pretty chill and there is very little hierarchy between the students and teachers. I had less attendance than at WU but that differs in courses. There were almost no Danish people in my courses so it was not good to meet Danish people but other international students. I had to write a paper in each course, but had very little work to do other than that.

5. Every day life in the host country

Denmark always felt very nice and safe to me. Public transport was a little bit of a pain and it is definitely nicer to just bike around, but that was less of an option for me since i lived pretty far out on a hill. Public transport is more expensive and way less frequent compared to Vienna. You can buy a bike on Facebook or rent it through Swapfiets. At the start I went to the ESN Aarhus Activities which they offer every week throughout the whole semester, but after meeting some people there I preferred going to other activities in Aarhus. It is a city with many cultural or other activities interesting for students. There are many bars and other places that are great for meeting up with friends. In general, Denmark offers many clubs and associations you could join. You will get all the information about that in your Orientation Week.

6. Testimonial

I really liked spending time in a small and fun city like Aarhus. What made it really special were the friends I made there. None of the the things you are going to stress about before are going to matter in the end. It was really nice to make so many new friends and just say yes to everything that I could do.
