1. Preparation

Overall I have to admit, that I was not quite prepared. I mean I was familiar with the most important information but that's it. But I knew, that it would work out after all. And so it did! So don't stress too much, I know it's a big step to go overseas and experience all of this, but don't forget to be spontaneous and excited to jump into the cold water.

2. Accommodation

There are really just two options: Walter Gage and Fairview Crescent. I was in Walter Gage and it was good enough. Proximity to the university and any other relevant location on campus is very good. My roommates were a bit weird and a lot of my exchange friends had a similar experience. (But who are we to judge). UBC campus is very safe so don't worry about that.

3. Academic life at host university

Campus is basically a small city, so it has almost everything you need. Yes, student lifestyle is a bit different, but really interesting. Teaching style depends, but is not too bad either. I really cannot recommend any courses, since I took some more advanced ones because I wanted to do interesting courses. A lot of my friends took some easier ones.

5. Every day life in the host country

You can do so much in Vancouver. Transportation is really good, but I didn't stay in the city at all. The city itself is ok but you really cannot compare it to Vienna. The best about Vancouver is its proximity to everything around. From ski resorts to countless hikes, the city offers the best location to experience the outdoor life. You meet people pretty fast and I have to admit, I miss them already. We stuck together almost everyday for 5 months and did the best things imaginable. Don't be anti-social and boring. Such a unique opportunity requires you to get out of your comfort zone to experience the best of the exchange.

6. Testimonial

UBC itself was great. Vancouver itself was great. The nature itself was even better, but the people you surround yourself with are the cherry on top. It is so much better to share your experience with others and especially since you are all sitting in the same boat.
