I started preparing for my exchange semester a few months in advance. I applied for accommodation through the university housing system and booked my flight to Stockholm early because prices increase quickly. From Stockholm, I shared an uber with other exchange students, because it was cheaper than the train.
The accommodation was provided by housing office Uppsala. You can specify three different preferences. I chose Rackarbergsgatan and I would choose it again. You live in a corridor, with your own toiled but shared kitchen and shower. Living there allows you to meet people quickly. It is located close to the center and basically close to everything. I would highly recommend living there.
The academic environment at Uppsala University was very international and interactive. Compared to WU Vienna, the teaching style was more discussion-based and focused on group work and presentations rather than only exams. The relationship between students and professors felt more informal and approachable. The workload was manageable and allowed enough time to travel and enjoy the exchange experience.
for the entire exchange
Public transport in Uppsala generally worked very well and was reliable, but it was also relatively expensive. Therefore, I would definitely recommend buying a bicycle at the beginning of the semester, since Uppsala is very bike-friendly and most students use bikes to get around. There were many opportunities for leisure activities and meeting new people, especially through the student nations, which organize events, dinners, parties, sports activities and cultural events for students. Uppsala also offers many gyms, running routes and outdoor activities. Overall, student life was very active and international, making it easy to connect with both exchange and Swedish students.
My exchange semester in Uppsala was an unforgettable experience that allowed me to meet people from all over the world and experience a completely different student culture. What made it especially unique was the strong sense of community through the student nations and the balance between academic life and social activities. I also loved the cozy Scandinavian lifestyle and the international atmosphere of the city. Overall, it was an experience I would definitely recommend to everyone.
