1. Preparation

First of all I would get in contact with the other people going to UCF, we helped each other a lot when we had questions. Moreover I would invest time in choosing the right courses and read all the descriptions and recommendations. Make sure to book your flight not to late, ours was really expensive.

2. Accommodation

I texted the people who had gone to UCF the semester before and asked them about the accommodation situation. They recommended different housing options and helped me. I stayed at "The Verge", it was a student dorm, 2 Miles away from the campus. The facility was very nice with a pool, gym and rooms for studying. The apartment was okay, it is not the newest and also depends on your roommates. It was one of the closest to the campus, by bike 8 minutes and with the UCF shuttle 5 min. Overall the campus and the area around University is very safe, we never felt uncomfortable, we also walked home at night. I wish I would known beforehand to not focus that much on the price, because I had a cheap contract, but had to pay two more months, although I was already back in Austria.

3. Academic life at host university

Campus facilities are amazing, there is a huge gym, a swimming pool, tennis courts, pickleball courts, basketball courts etc. and you can rent the equipment for free. The library is very modern and a nice place to study. The classes are similar to WU, you learn the material at home and focus on practical applications in class. In the most classes, you have a lot of homework and quizzes every week, however the exams are not that difficult. In most classes you will have a lot of interaction with other students and meet a lot of new people. I can recommend Marketing, because the professor also teaches a lot about future career development and personal growth.

5. Every day life in the host country

There is a free shuttle service from many student dorms to the campus. Orlando is a very safe area, and we never had a bad experience. The campus is a little bit outside of downtown Orlando, it takes about 25 minutes to get there, but you have everything you need in the University area. The Global Knights Club often organizes events for exchange students, such as camping trips, which were very exciting experiences. It is also very easy to get to know local people. Sports is very popular, there are many sports opportunities on campus, and most of them are free.

My exchange semester at UCF was honestly an amazing experience and definitely one of the best times of my studies. I always felt comfortable on campus, everyone was super open and helpful, and it was really easy to meet new people. Florida is called the “Sunshine State” for a reason — if you love sun, warm weather, and a relaxed lifestyle, it is basically the perfect place. The good weather and the positive vibe of the people just made everyday life so much better. One of the coolest parts was meeting exchange students from all over the world and getting to know so many different cultures and perspectives. At the same time, you also learn a lot about yourself and grow personally during the semester. I would definitely recommend traveling as much as possible, because Orlando is a perfect starting point for trips around Florida and the US. If you organize your courses well, you can easily make the most of your weekends and explore a lot during your exchange.
