1. Preparation

Before my studies at Tsinghua university there is a lot of paperwork you have to do. First of all you have to apply to a Student Visa for China which requires several steps. You should start ealry with this process to have enough time to gather all the necessary documents. Tsinghua university also requires a health check before you start your studies. There is an option to do that health check in China, provided by the university. It is way cheaper than doing it in Europe and you are sure that the results will be valid. Other than the paperwork you have to fill out for the university, i just applied for the housing on campus and booked my flights.

2. Accommodation

The university provides accommodation on Campus. You stay in one of the international houses, where you share your room with one other person, which you do not know before. Toilets and showers as well as a kitchen are on the hallway. The room is not big but has all the necessary furniture as well as a sink. The total costs for the accomodation was 250€ a month. I recommend taking that opportunity as most of the exchange students stay on Campus. As you will spend most of your time on campus, this gives you the opportunity of getting to know many people and finding new friends. The applications for the accommodation works on a first come first serve basis. I was 4 hours late on applying but still got a room. I think there will be enough spaces for all the exchange students, but you should still make sure to apply as fast as possible

3. Academic life at host university

The academic life at the host university is kind of similar to WU Vienna. The courses have exams. But you also have a lot of presentations and your participation in class gets graded aswell. The grading is also very similar to WU Vienna. If you put in some work it is not to hard getting good grades. The classes are very interesting and have a lot of debates led by the students. It was not to much work and the pressure was not specially fierce. As most classes are just with exchange students the classes are very chill, as most of them have no need to have good grades, as it doesn´t count for them.

5. Every day life in the host country

The life happens very much on the campus. The campus is huge and has everything you need. It has several gyms, sportsfields, tennis courts and even an ice ring. So you can join every sports club you want to. The campus also has 16 canteens, which have super cheap and delicious food. One meals costs around 1-3€. You can have breakfast, lunch and dinner on campus. Most students use this as there is not kitchen to cook your own food. There are some supermarkets one campus where you can buy drinks and snacks. But for proper meals everybody is going to the canteens. On the weekends most students explore Beijing or take the fast-trains to other cities to travel. It is super cheap in China to travel and super comfortable, so you definitely use that opportunity

6. Testimonial

The highlights of my exchange experience was the amazing campus life that the university provided. You had amazing canteens and sport facilities. Other than that you should use your time to travel and see different parts of China. Everything is very cheap and very easy to navigate. An exchange in China is very underrated.
