1. Preparation

It is really important to do proper research before choosing the list of universities you want to apply to, as US colleges differ significantly. Depending on your focus, geographical factors and studying in a dedicated college town like Champaign-Urbana will completely shape your experience. The internal application process can feel unpredictable and heavily depends on your interviewer, but good preparation is still essential. Don’t stress out too much, though, as the final placement is ultimately out of your hands. Once you receive your acceptance, it is crucial to apply for your visa as soon as possible, since political or administrative situations can change quickly. During our application cycle, an unexpected visa stop lasted for over two months, leaving many students in limbo until the very last weeks before departure. Academic planning should also start as early as possible. Since the Gies College of Business is highly popular and classes fill up quickly, you should check the syllabus databases early to prepare a flexible list of courses. Depending on your personal goals, you can choose a lighter workload to have more time for social life and traveling, or take advantage of highly specialized courses that will significantly boost your professional skill set. Connecting with peers heading to the same destination before departure is a complete game-changer. Attending pre-departure meetups or stammtische is an excellent way to network, make early connections with American students, and meet fellow exchange participants. This made the first few weeks on campus exponentially easier, and the people I met beforehand turned out to be some of my closest friends during the exchange. Traveling to campus from Chicago is very straightforward. If you are heading straight from O’Hare Airport, the Peoria Charter Bus is a fantastic and stress-free option because it picks you up right at the terminal and drives directly to campus. Alternatively, if you plan to spend a few days in the city first, taking the Amtrak train from Chicago Union Station straight to the Illinois Terminal in Champaign is highly comfortable and affordable.

2. Accommodation

If you are coming for the spring semester in January, you should absolutely focus on finding a sublease, as there is a huge surplus of students studying abroad who need someone to take over their apartments. However, if you are arriving in August for the fall semester, you should start by getting a broad overview of all available options early on and actively reaching out to landlords or current tenants. No matter which semester you choose, location is critical. You should make sure your apartment is located very close to an MTD bus station and within a maximum walking distance of 20 to 25 minutes to the university buildings. This setup ensures you remain highly flexible and comfortable, especially when navigating the campus during the unpredictable Illinois weather.

3. Academic life at host university

The academic culture and campus facilities at UIUC differ significantly from what you might be used to at WU Vienna. The campus itself is monumental, featuring a vast layout with many different university buildings spread across Champaign and Urbana, including more modern but also a few older ones. The student infrastructure is exceptional, with the absolute highlight being the ARC (Activities and Recreation Center). It is one of two student fitness centers, offering massive gym spaces, indoor and outdoor pools, and top-tier cardio zones equipped with everything you need to maintain a structured training routine. When it comes to the academic culture, the teaching style at UIUC is generally very approachable and communication-forward. Compared to the rigid, exam-heavy structure at WU Vienna, professors and teaching assistants here are incredibly open, highly communicative, and interactive. The grading system is structurally different as well; instead of relying on a single final exam, the workload is distributed continuously throughout the semester with quizzes, group participation, and multiple opportunities to earn extra credit or bonus points. This continuous evaluation style makes it much easier to keep up with the material and secure a good grade. For course selections, I highly recommend taking ADV 150 (Introduction to Advertising). It is a fantastic, highly engaging class that is perfect if you want to get credit transferred for your marketing requirements back home. To strategically plan your semester schedule and pick the right classes or sections, you should absolutely use the UIUC grade disparity tool created by Wade Fagen-Ulmschneider at https://waf.cs.illinois.edu/discovery/grade_disparity_between_sections_at_uiuc/. This website lets you look up the historic grade distributions and average GPAs for almost every course and professor on campus, ensuring you select sections that fit your academic goals and give you plenty of transparency before you even step into the classroom.

5. Every day life in the host country

Everyday life in Champaign-Urbana is incredibly convenient and structured, making it easy to adapt quickly. Public transportation is one of the biggest highlights of the area; the MTD bus system is excellent, highly frequent, and connects all corners of the campus to the surrounding community. High-frequency campus routes like the Illini, Teal, or Green lines run every 10 minutes during the academic year, and the best part is that all rides are completely free for students just by showing your university i-Card. For late-night travel, the university also provides great safety alternatives like the MTD SafeRides on-demand van service and SafeWalks, which are excellent tools if you are leaving the library late at night. Regarding safety, the campus and the surrounding neighborhoods are generally very safe, and I never felt unsafe or ran into any dangerous situations during my entire stay. The university has its own dedicated police department and utilizes the "Illini-Alert" text and email emergency notification system to keep everyone immediately informed if anything happens in the area. Social and leisure activities are deeply tied to the vibrant American college culture. There are always campus events, student club activities, and social gatherings happening around Green Street. For sports and fitness options, your routine will center around the monumental ARC (Activities and Recreation Center) or CRCE, which offer world-class gym facilities, massive cardio areas, pools, and sports courts. To fully experience the legendary school spirit, attending the Fighting Illini football games at Memorial Stadium or basketball games at the State Farm Center is an absolute must and serves as a major highlight of student life in the host country.

I highly encourage future exchange students to actively step out of their comfort zone and make American friends, you can learn so much from their perspective and lifestyle. This spirit of openness extends straight into the classroom, where professors constantly encourage you to think critically and apply your knowledge far beyond the university walls. Furthermore, the university administration and support staff are exceptionally helpful; whenever you face a problem or an administrative hurdle, they are always willing to guide you. It is a phenomenal place to grow both academically and personally.
