1. Preparation

The preparation for my exchange started a few months before my departure regarding the accommodation, registration for the university and courses. The finalization of everything was just a few weeks before leaving to Prague. Since Prague is close, I only had to buy a train ticket a few days before. My family helped me with moving my things to the dormitory, therefore I did not have any difficulties. Everything went as planned, the dormitory respected all our agreements. I moved in on the day it was planned, the university had welcome days as scheduled and the courses started according to the dates on their university platform. I had a list of all the things I had to do before leaving to Prague. I was mostly stress-free. WU contributed too, since they made sure nothing was left unclear of what has to be done before departuring, during the semester and after. If there were some questions I wrote emails or spoke to my friends that also did exchange in Prague to clear any misunderstandings.

2. Accommodation

My host university had a dormitory especially for VSE students and it was easy to apply online. I had no issue with application process. The dormitory campus was 15 minutes away from university, and about 25 minutes away from city center. I have felt very safe in the dorms. We had our student cards that we used to get in. The surrounding area was quiet, safe and student friendly. I could only point out that I wasn't assigned to the dorm building I actually applied for. The dorm administration informed me about this, in my opinion, too late. They didn't mention earlier that there would be a possibility for this. They just let me know that there were renovations and there was no space. I was a bit disappointed, because that specific dorm building had mostly international, exchange students, and mine wasn't like that. Other than that, I had a positive experience.

3. Academic life at host university

Compared to WU Vienna, VSE had a more traditional, I would say book-based teaching style. There was not much theory in practice. The facilities in Vienna are more up to date. In terms of career, WU offers more possibilities at university, but VSE has a stronger student life culture at university. I would recommend courses that focus more on their application in real life and not pure book knowledge. The course Foundations of Entrepreneurship, I particularly enjoyed for this reason.

5. Every day life in the host country

Very similar to Vienna, I would argue maybe even safer in my experience. Overall positive experience with plenty of student activities organized by the ESN organization, university and general possibilities in Prague. Cheap transport for students, discounts with ISIC and ESN card for food and travel.

6. Testimonial

My exchange semester was an unforgettable experience. It made me realize how a change in environment can drastically change your perspective on the world and even on your own culture. In the future I hope to be as open to new activities as I was on my semester abroad.
