1. Preparation

I recommend starting the preparation early, especially when it comes to finding accommodation and keeping track of administrative tasks and deadlines. The course registration at LUSEM worked very well. We could indicate our preferred courses and, for each course, also select two alternatives. For my journey to Lund, I flew with Ethiopian Airlines to Copenhagen. I would recommend this option, especially because two pieces of checked luggage were already included in the ticket price. Getting from Copenhagen Airport to Lund was very straightforward. On Arrival Day, university staff helped us with the train and tickets at the airport, and at Lund station they helped with our luggage before a shuttle bus took us directly to the university for registration. This made the whole arrival very easy and personal.

2. Accommodation

I recommend looking for accommodation as early as possible. Lund University offers relatively cheap student accommodation, but these places are primarily reserved for students from outside the EU, while the remaining rooms are allocated through a lottery. Unfortunately, I was not lucky enough to get a place and therefore decided to look for private accommodation instead. I lived at COLIVE in a modern shared apartment. I had my own bedroom and bathroom, while the kitchen and living room were shared with 5 to 8 other people, depending on the apartment. The rent was higher than for university accommodation, but the building was very new and the standard of living was really great. The rent included everything, even weekly cleaning of the shared areas. There was a shared laundry room with several washing machines and dryers, as well as another common area for the whole building where residents could spend time together. Most communication with COLIVE was handled through their own app, which made things quite convenient. The location was good: the tram was right next to the building, it was about 5 minutes by bike to LUSEM and around 10–15 minutes by bike to the city centre.

3. Academic life at host university

LUSEM and the whole Lund University campus, with its multiple libraries and different faculties, are very nice and worth exploring. The academic culture at Lund was much more informal than what I was used to at WU. Everyone is on a first-name basis, and courses are generally much more interactive. Instead of mainly listening to lectures, we had many discussions, group work and practical activities in smaller groups. At the same time, in some courses there was quite a lot of preparation required through readings, book chapters and academic articles. I really liked this teaching style, as it made the classes more engaging and encouraged everyone to actively participate. As a Business Informatics student, I can suggest the course Digital Innovation and Transformation, as it was very interactive and also included interesting guest lectures. I also recommend the Beginner Swedish course. It takes place before the semester officially starts, only requires a multiple-choice test and is a great opportunity to meet other international exchange students.

5. Every day life in the host country

For getting around Lund, I would definitely recommend getting a bike. Almost everyone uses a bike, and most places can be reached very quickly. Public transport is also great, with mainly buses and one tram line. For longer trips, the trains are very convenient. I also took several day trips during my exchange, for example to Malmö, Copenhagen, Helsingborg, Lomma Beach, Ven Island and Mölle/Kullaberg, which I can all recommend. I always felt very safe in Lund and never had any problems during my stay. There are many student events and activities throughout the semester, especially through the different student nations. These include parties, game nights, Fika, sports activities and traditional sittnings. Some nations also offer lunch at fair prices. They organise so many different events that there is almost always something going on. Most events are listed in the STUK app, where you can find further information and buy tickets. Everyday life in Lund was very enjoyable, especially because it's a relatively small city with so many students and young people. Because Lund is not very big, you often run into familiar faces in everyday life, which makes it easy to feel part of the community. There are many cafés, restaurants and bars, as well as some other activities such as museums, a cinema, a billiard hall and a sports bar.

My exchange in Lund was one of the best experiences I've had during my time at university. What made it special was the great student life, with so many international students, events and opportunities to meet people from different countries and backgrounds. I am very grateful that I had the opportunity to experience this and see it as a real privilege. I will definitely remember the people I met and the experiences we shared.
