1. Preparation

To prepare for your exchange semester, start looking for accommodation as early as possible, as housing options can fill up quickly. It is also a good idea to open a bank account that does not charge international transaction or withdrawal fees. Before departure, get in contact with students from your home university who have studied there before, as they can provide valuable support regarding housing, activities, courses. Make sure to arrive no later than the official arrival day. Many orientation events and activities already begin on that day, giving you an excellent opportunity to meet other exchange students, make new friends, and settle into your new environment.

2. Accommodation

I would recommend checking Facebook groups when searching for accommodation, as there are often more private apartments available there, especially if you prefer living alone or in a smaller shared flat. At the same time, make sure to sign up for the university housing platform to gain access to student residences. Regarding location, I would suggest finding accommodation in the city center. Lund is a relatively small city, so most places can easily be reached on foot, and a bicycle is sufficient for longer distances. The university is located slightly outside the city center, but it is still within walking distance, and buses and trams connect the campus to the city in just a few minutes. As for safety, I never felt as safe in a city as I did in Lund. There is no need to worry about safety issues. The city is very welcoming, and because such a large proportion of the population consists of students, you constantly feel surrounded by friends and fellow students.

3. Academic life at host university

The campus offers many facilities that make student life very convenient. There are numerous dining options with affordable prices, plenty of spaces for individual study as well as group work, and several beautiful parks nearby where students can spend their lunch breaks or relax with friends between classes. Compared to WU Vienna, I would describe the teaching style as more student-oriented. Courses often include discussions, reflections, teamwork, and group papers. The focus is placed more on collaboratively developing an understanding of the subject matter rather than on traditional lecture-based teaching. This creates a very interactive learning environment and encourages active participation. I can highly recommend the course Leadership and Change Management. Although the workload was occasionally demanding, I learned a great deal and had the opportunity to connect with many Swedish students, which enriched my exchange experience both academically and socially.

5. Every day life in the host country

Despite Lund being a relatively small city, public transportation is excellent. Buses and trams provide good connections throughout the city, making it easy to get around without a car. During the week, public transport generally operates until shortly after midnight, while services run later on weekends. Lund offers a truly unique student life, largely thanks to the student nations. The nations play a central role in social life and organize a wide range of activities, including parties, sports, community events, cultural traditions, and affordable lunches. Students who volunteer at a nation are often invited to sittnings, traditional Swedish dinner events that provide a fantastic opportunity to meet Swedish students, experience local traditions, and create unforgettable memories. The city itself also hosts many events throughout the year. During the spring semester, Valborg is undoubtedly the highlight and is an unforgettable experience for both local and international students. Additionally, Lund's famous carnival, which takes place every four years, is a major event that I was fortunate enough to experience during my exchange. Overall, Lund is the perfect student city: small enough that you frequently run into friends while walking through town, yet lively enough to offer countless opportunities for socializing, sports, cultural activities, dining, and nightlife. The welcoming atmosphere and vibrant student community make it an exceptional place to spend an exchange semester.

6. Testimonial

My exchange in Lund was an unforgettable experience, mainly because of the unique student life and the incredible sense of community. The student nations connected me with amazing people from both the international Erasmus community and Sweden, leading to countless memorable evenings, celebrations, and friendships. What made the exchange truly special was life in Lund itself. A city that feels both intimate and vibrant at the same time.
