1. Preparation

In hindsight my first few recommendations reagrding your preparation are to look at a few things you want to do around the area such as skiing, hiking etc. and pack accordingly. I chose a flight that arrived in Victoria, but i have heard from a lot of colleagues that they flew to Vancouver and took the ferry. If you are thinking simply in monetary terms, even though Vancouver is probably cheaper, the cost of the ferry and a possible night stay in Vancouver might even out the price diffrences. Regarding the weather, Victoria is quite warm comparably, so don't overpack on heavy winter clothing.

2. Accommodation

I simply applied for the University housing opportunities for a cluster. These are simple apartments shared with 3 others, that include a kitchen but no bed sheets, pillows or blankets. Except for downtown maybe Victoria in general is safe even at night time. There are some other off campus living opportunities, but I had a lot of fun living on campus as you live closely with your friends. If you know and like some of the other people from WU that go to UVic it makes sense to include that information in the application, as they will pair you together in an apartment. When living on campus you are offered to be included in a meal plan, but since I like to cook and had a own apartment, I didnt need it.

3. Academic life at host university

The campus is super cool, as you have a big sportsfield free to use and a relatively cheap on-campus gym aswell as climbing spaces. The library is free and also comfy. In general Id say the campus has a calm vibe to it as its close to the woods and very green. Teaching styles differ as there are a lot of attendences and group works, so I would choose 3 courses that challenge you and 2 that sound comparably lax with many of them being on the same few days, so you have some free time to explore.

5. Every day life in the host country

canada has similarly to the US a car culture giving cities a bigger span which at times can feel unnecessary and wide. Thus public transport will take you anywhere in Victoria but just take a little longer. The city is safe even at night times, but I still wouldnt hang out too much around downtown as Drug Abuse and Tents can fill some streets. Its easy to avoid these regions, but still something to respect when walking alone. Vancouver Island has an amazing natural diversity and a one of a kind ecosystem due to its weather, which is why hiking and outdoor activity options are endless. The scenery here is something special and a trip around the island with a car is a must.

My exchange was amazing and something i would not have expected. Being so far away from Europe and Home helps to grow independet and makes on stick even closer together with the friends one will find. My friends were from all around the globe and we had a lot of fun enjoying Victorias Nightlife or simply hanging out on campus. The scenery and sights I was able to enjoy here are probably uncomparable and one of a kind.
