1. Preparation

First of all, the weather changes really fast and frequently from hot to cold, so pack accordingly. Apart from that, do the preparation for the university and do not hesitate to ask them. They are really nice and will help you with every question. Book your flights as soon as possible, because the flights to Charlotte or Columbia get expensive quickly (BUT check the date you got from UofSC). There are multiple things you have to upload before your stay at UofSC – for instance: -Formal application -Personal information via the application tool -Housing application Regarding the housing: there is also a deadline for your housing application, don't forget that!

2. Accommodation

Finding accommodation is really easy because you have guaranteed on-campus living, so just follow the application process. If you choose this option you will get the classic American dorm experience, but it is also really expensive. I lived in South Quad, which was really nice and a great location to get to all different kinds of activities! (I brought a little light for my desk from IKEA, which I found really useful – just as a little side note.) I felt safe and welcome in my student housing, so I can recommend it, although I did hear different experiences from other people. I also had friends who looked for their own accommodation – it was way cheaper, but also not as close to the university buildings and activities.

3. Academic life at host university

The campus facilities are really really good. Everything is modern and there is a comfortable teaching environment. The academic culture and the teaching style have a more practical approach, which makes it interesting and fun to engage with (depending on the subject, of course). It also gives you a change in perspective! There are many courses you can take, so suggesting just a few is difficult. What I would suggest is taking a look at the first number of the courses you are considering – the higher the number, the more difficult the course is!

5. Every day life in the host country

I never used public transportation because everything was within walkable distance for me. Apart from that I felt safe on campus, but there were some Carolina alerts which reported danger. Social life was incredible fun and there are many options to find activities that suit you! There were also events which were also kind of fun. I can definitely recommend going to the sport events (Summer especially basketball season; winter football season - everything I heard about was truly amazing!!!) You have incredible options in sport facilities and activities, I can highly recommend the intramural sports.

6. Testimonial

All in all it was a really special time! There were the really fun sports events, where all of the students came together to cheer for the team, the community itself and the events, where you met a lot of people from the university and so on. Also I have to add the great traveling opportunities (especially by car, because there were limited flight opportunities from the airport) to national parks, the sea and the inner part of the country. I definitely got the real American experience there!
