1. Preparation

Research on the culture & what are does and don’ts there. What you can do in this country- outside of university. The safety in the country and what to be aware of especially as a women. E-Sim before arrival so that you have internet connection. Transport in Hong Kong goes easily via Octopus. Look timely for an appropriate accommodation (some of the university’s student halls are very bad).

2. Accommodation

I decided for a student dorm. The process to apply was easily, there are many different halls you can choose from, but it’s not guaranteed that you get one of those. There are just a few pictures and the reality looks worse than the pictures. My hall was Lee Shau Kee Hall and I wouldn’t recommend it, because it is old and moldy (My room was full of mold). One good thing about the accommodation was that it is nearby the university and the city center. A lot of other exchange students were in Jockey Club Village 4 which is more far away, but new and you have single rooms.

3. Academic life at host university

The campus is really nice and very big. There are a lot of dining options there. The classrooms are very cold, because they set the air conditioning to a very low level, which is not so nice. So better were something warmer, even if it is warm outside. The classrooms are older compared to those at WU Vienna. I did the leadership and development course as an example and this was very nice.

5. Every day life in the host country

Public transport is very convenient. I felt very safe in the city (even when walking out alone at later hours in the evening). It is very nice for running at the promenade on Hong Kong Island. On Wednesday there are the horse races at Happy Valley where all the exchange students gather. Hiking in HK is really nice.

6. Testimonial

Hong Kong is such a great city - the skyline is amazing. The food was nothing for me & more western food is really expensive. Local students are not very open to foreigners, so meeting with other foreign students is the best option to find friends there. Doing an exchange semester in Hong Kong is such a great experience & I would absolutely recommend it to anyone, but better research your accommodation intensely to not get a shock when arriving there.
