1. Preparation

I really wanted to go to any country in the south because the spirit is just defending so on my list must be Portugal and Italy and then I checked the excel sheet prepared. Bye love you and I looked at all the different universities in Madrid and so I decided for UC3M.

2. Accommodation

The uni specifically doesn’t provide any information about recommendations so I searched on the platform called WG gesucht. There I found a very nice shared department for girls only provided by a German landlord so quite early in October I got in contact with him and decided to book the place. I lived quite in the south of Madrid so near Getafe, the university campus which was nice, but you maybe should consider leaving near Sol, because this is the life of the party in Madrid and every time you’re meeting up with your friends you meet there.

3. Academic life at host university

Campus, very adorable but a bit outside of Madrid so it may take a long time to get there. I would recommend taking 93 to Alcazar and then changing one station to Juan de la cierva. The Cerecanias Renfe Trains In Madrid are very often delayed and sometimes you have to wait 15 minutes for a train to arrive. Academic culture general is more relaxed than at WU. Most of the classes are not mandatory and I also wouldn’t recommend to go because the teachers often only read from the slides. But on the other hand, I wouldn’t underestimate the workload. Some courses really take effort and it’s hard to get a good grade. I struggled a lot with the course management and control. I can really recommend the courses entrepreneurship and marketing communications | social media, as it is a lower workload and is easy to obtain a good grade.

5. Every day life in the host country

Public transportation systems are very nice, especially the Metro. You should get the carne joven transoort card, which is €10 a month for all the transportation systems within Madrid as well as buses for daytrips a little out of madrid, for example Toledo. The safety situation is also very nice. I felt so much safer than in Vienna. Also as a woman alone at night. I never had a bad experience here. In summer it’s also very nice to go to the pool, via the app Madrid Móvil you can book a day ticket for only €4. We also booked tennis and paddle courts over the app, which is way cheaper than in Vienna (€5 per hour), so I would recommend ringing your racket from home. One last advice is don’t buy the ESN card they offer you at the begginng, I really didn’t need it and also the events organised by them sometimes were disappointing.

I had the best time of my life here. I don’t regret doing my exchange in Madrid. It is really one of the best cities for students. We had everything here. Starting with the best night life and the clean beautiful city with a lot of activities to do. Make the most of the opportunities to travel, meet new people, and experience the local culture, while also staying on top of your studies. Finding a healthy balance between academics and enjoying your exchange will help you make the most of this unforgettable experience.
