1. Preparation

Start early with the course selection Make sure that you don´t have any overlaps Ask former exchange students about their experience and how they organised their schedules I travelled by plane

2. Accommodation

Accommodation is organised by the housing office Student residence (single room apartment with bathroom) I lived in Klostergatan, which is located in the city center (pretty safe and approximately 10 min walk to the university) Make sure that you leave your apartment in a good condition, since the housing office is pretty strict regarding cleaning etc.

3. Academic life at host university

One aspect I particularly appreciated about studying at Uppsala University was the strong focus on active learning. Instead of mainly listening to long lectures, students were expected to prepare in advance, contribute their own thoughts, and reflect critically on the course material. This made the learning experience feel more dynamic and less anonymous than what I had previously experienced at WU Vienna. The overall atmosphere was also more open and collaborative. Classes often felt less hierarchical, as professors were approachable and discussions were encouraged rather than limited to formal questions. This helped create a learning environment in which students felt more comfortable sharing opinions, challenging ideas, and learning from each other. I'd recommend courses with a stronger focus on presentations and participance

5. Every day life in the host country

Living in Uppsala quickly became one of the highlights of my exchange semester. What I liked most was that the city offered a good balance between a calm everyday rhythm and a very active student life. Because Uppsala is relatively small, it was easy to feel at home after a short time, and meeting other students happened quite naturally. Student life was strongly shaped by the nations. They played an important role not only as places for going out, but also as social meeting points where students could attend dinners, cultural events, concerts, and traditional celebrations. This made the semester feel very lively and helped international students become part of the local student community. During the beginning of the exchange semester, indoor activities such as meeting friends for coffee, cooking together, or attending nation events became especially important.

My exchange semester in Uppsala was a unique and enriching experience that combined academic growth with a very active student life. I especially appreciated the interactive teaching style, the close contact with other students, and the strong sense of community created by the student nations. Overall, the semester helped me become more independent, open-minded, and confident in an international environment.
