1. Preparation

I received all the information from the partner university via email. I then gradually started looking for private housing. You have to start early when applying for residencies, including those offered by the university. After that, I booked my flights.

2. Accommodation

Geneva is small and generally safe. University housing and other residences are hard to get for EU citizens during the summer semester, and you have to apply early. It’s possible to live in France; it’s cheaper, but it takes longer to get into the city. There are also often older couples who sublet a room.

3. Academic life at host university

There are several campuses in Geneva that are located close to one another. The university has a pleasant atmosphere, and there is a wide range of extracurricular sports and cultural activities available. I feel that the teaching style is a bit more strict than at WU; in my classes here, expressing my own opinions and participating actively were even more important than in my WU classes.

5. Every day life in the host country

Public transportation is excellent and is free for people under 25. Geneva is a safe city. There are many opportunities (especially at the university) to get involved in sports and social activities. Geneva offers a wide range of cultural activities, especially in the summer.

6. Testimonial

The people were great, and the atmosphere was very relaxed and casual. Switzerland is beautiful, and you can go on lots of great trips and do all kinds of activities, whether with ESN or on your own. Compared to Vienna, it’s really nice that everything is so centrally located, and the quality of life—with the lake, the river, and the mountains in the background—is incredibly high.
