1. Preparation

Because of the long distance between Vienna and Bergen, taking a train would take around 24h or something like that and it would cost nearly as much as going by plane. I decided to fly directly to Bergen but I now from other exchange students that the flew to Oslo, stayed there for a few days and then traveled to Bergen by train as the train ride from Oslo to Bergen offers a great landscape and is really recommendable. There is no need for a lot of preperation because every information one might need prior to the stay abroad is offered by the incoming exchange webpage from NHH.

2. Accommodation

Accommodation search is very easy in Norway. Incoming exchange students can apply for student housing at Sammen and are guaranteed a spot in one of their houses. Most of exchange students from NHH and even a lot of regular students are living at Hatleberg as its right across the street from university. I stayed there and from my experience its probably the best student housing/accommodation you can get. Its affordable, I had a room with great view across Bergen as well as the fjord, it only takes you around 10mins to get to the city center by bus and there is a grocery store, a fitness center and the university within 5mins of walking distance. It feels like a very safe location, although I have to say it feels very safe everywhere in Bergen.

3. Academic life at host university

The campus facilities are great, the lecture halls are very modern and the university looks great. The academic culture is amazing, everyone is motivated and hard working, the teaching style is quite similar to WU in some courses, however there are many courses with very different teaching style, much more engaging, informal and seminar like. A lot of times there are projects to do in groups and many courses also apply the theory to case studies making it more praxis oriented rather than theory intensive as it is at WU. As exchange student you are also allowed to take Masters courses and I would really recommend doing it. I myself took Corporate Finance and Behavioural Finance and Wealth Management, both of which were great courses I can really recommend. Another course I took was Enviromental Economics, it's a bachelor course, not to hard to get good grades and the content is very interesting. The last course I took was Business Taxation, overall it is an interesting course as well but from my point of view it was worst course out of those I took and I would not recommend it if you are not heavily into taxes.

5. Every day life in the host country

Public transport in Bergen is amazing, there are buses everywhere and they are very frequently (every 3-5mins from Hatleberg to the center for example). You can buy a ticket at the start of the semester for 180 days for around 200 Euros so its not super cheap but definetly affordable. The safety situation is great as mentioned before, I felt very safe during my stay abroad. There are a lot of things you can do in Bergen, if you like hiking its the perfekt place as there are many routes around Bergen and you can get some amazing views from the seven mountains of Bergen. I really recommend going on Ulriken, it is the highest mountain, something around 600 meters and there is a lovely restaurant on the top. The university, or rather the student organistations are hosting a lot of events throughout the semester and there is always something to do. From a sports point of view norway is the perfect country, you have very affordable fitness studios (for exchange students around 110 Euros for the semester) and all of the studios have a sauna included as well as other things. The gym at NHH (Lehmkuhlhallen) has a climbing area inside, a gaming room and a room for basketball/football. In the city center there is even a gym with a swimming pool and you can go there with the exchange student abo. Besides the gym there are also many sport activities from NHH, they have a sports team in almost every sport you can think of, allthough it is hard for exchange students to get into the football team for example as your stay is only for one semester. But there is a running club open for everyone and a lot of options you will hear about once you are in Bergen.

As NHH is very international I got to know a lot of people from everywhere around the world, made some great friends and traveled through Norway alongside them which was amazing and I can recommend anyone to do it. Besides the people, Bergen is a great city to be at and the things you can do are endless. For me the best part is skiing and hiking in the nature of Norway as the landscape is very unique and you get to see some great views along the journey.
