1. Preparation

I would recommend to start searching a flat or room as early as you can. I find it important to be close to a metro station, since it's the best functioning public transport in rome and the only one nearly on time. To get to rome, you can take the ÖBB Nightjet, wich is not very expensive on some days if you book early.

2. Accommodation

I found my room in a shared flat (two other girls) through erasmusu. It is one of many websites, where you can find flats easily but expensive. If you have the chance, I would rather join some WhatsApp-groups in advance and look there if someone's offering their room or just ask. for foreign students it can be quiet hard to find a good flat. Maybe find someone else to look with. My flat was located in Castro Pretorio wich is located in the right centre of Rome and has maybe the best connections to the whole city. Although my location was central, I would have wished to stay in a more grown area with a greater feeling of "locality". If you search a place near the University I suggest the area around Piazza Bologna or San Lorenzo. Pigneto is a bit more outside but a very sweet area.

3. Academic life at host university

The academic life is a bit different to the WU and way more distant and bigger. I honestly haven't been to much at the campus after I found my friends. The campus of the economic faculty is located just outside the main campus in a building from the 1970's (I guess). The teaching style is very distant and in my opinion more monotonous. I didn't enjoy my lecture's too much. Be careful, since there are a lot of oral exams at La Sapienza. I recommend the course Business History by Mauro Rota and Managerial Economics by Francesco Porcelli, which is kind of like microeconomics. I also took International Marketing Management by Alessandra Bucci because it had 9 ECTS and an easy exam.

5. Every day life in the host country

The public transport in Rome is not comparable to Vienna. The 3 metro lines are functioning well but are barely covering the whole city. Busses are always late or just come when they want, so you should check the moovit app before taking one. Rome is a big and chaotic city but not as bad as may think. there are a lot of parks and bars to go and most of the areas are quiet. I would consider Rome as mostly safe. You have a lot of options for outside activities like football or yoga through the Erasmus organisation or in private. The sea is only an hour away...

6. Testimonial

I had a great time in Rome and would definitely recommend it. The beauty and history of this city is unique and you can feel it everywhere. The parks in this city are the most special ones I saw in my life (Villa Borghese, Villa Pamphilj, Villa Sciarra...) and the drinks can be cheaper than in Vienna! I tried to soak the city in as much as I can and it was the best decision.
