1. Preparation

I completed my exchange at the Haskayne Business School in Kanada. My preparation included countless E-Mails with the Host unoversity to get an on-campus housing spot (I got denied at first but wrote them so many E-Mails that they gace up and offered me a housing spot). Another set of E-Mails regarded the course selection, I wanted to make sure that all the courses I chose fitted the WU-Requirements. Another thing that helped with that was the "Anerkennungsliste", where you could see which courses from previous exchange semester were approved by WU. Next on the list was booking Plane tickets and VISA for Kanada. I booked via Lufthansa since I wanted a reliable Airline for the flight and on top they offer student discounts. Furthermore I recommend to book a flight were the layover is in a european country since missing a connecting flight in a foreign county without any internet or mobile Data and maybe not even a method of payment can be very risky. When it comes to applying for a VISA for Kanada it was dead-simple. They had an online website where you could apply with a cost of around $5. They sent the Visa within 5 minutes to my E-Mail and was connected to my passport. Since I went in the Winter to Kanada I made sure to pack some warm clothes altho I think I packed too warm since it is a dry chiliness and not a wet one like here in europe.

2. Accommodation

I chose on-campus residence, aka dorms. I got it recommended by friends so that´s why I wanted to get into one. At first I didn´t get a place because it is chosen randomly who get´s in. But I persisted and kept in writing E-Mails until they got annoyed and gave up and offered me a spot. The dorm room was an apartement style dorm directly on campus. I shared a bathroom and kitchen with 2 other guys but had my own bedroom with a desk. It was really close to my lecture hall so I could walk it in like 10 Minutes from door to door. In general I felt really safe on campus. Tips I wish I knew is that you have to apply pretty early and it´s pretty tricky to finde the website.

3. Academic life at host university

The campus was a whole small city itself. There was everything on campus, from food halls to dentists over supermarkets. They had everything! Most important to me was that they had a really big, modern and clean gym on campus, which was for free for all stundents. The teaching style was much more personal than at WU. The biggest course I had we we´re like 25 people, so you get much more personal with teacher and they also learn your name. To add to that the grading system was also different, the focus was way more on oral grades such as presentation but also assignments to complete at home. Way more pleasent. Regarding course recommendation I don´t have any. I would recommend going after the profs, there´s a website called "ratemyprof". I would browse for good rated profs, since same at WU the course is very dependent on the prof.

5. Every day life in the host country

Regarding public transport, Calgary was pretty bad. The busses and train didn´t run very often and we´re often dirty and old, BUT I highly recommend using Uber. It is so cheap and easy and get´s you around way faster, also look out for friends with cars ;). Safety was no issue, no sketchy people, no homless people bothering you, and no public drug usage. Calgary was a very safe and relatively clean city. And there are so many social activities, too many to name, but I am sure that everyone will find something. But I highly recommend going to Hockey Games, they were very fun. And maybe the Calgary Stampede.

6. Testimonial

A once in a lifetime experience, where you will drink a lot but also have a lot of fun and meet friends for life. Don´t be shy or let negative people bring you down. You´re only a limited time there and use it. Keep in touch with the people you meet.
