1. Preparation

For preparation I decided to book a flight as soon as possible to ensure not to expensive prices. Especially when you consider all the luggage that you are taking with you. I did not really prepare myself in a special way. I justn started packing early enough to ensure to have all my important stuff with me. I actually flex to Athens 2 weeks before the real Erasmus was starting. It really helps you to find you way around the city and adapt to your new home.

2. Accommodation

I found my aparment via HousingAnywhere which is a common platform for temporarly stay ( around 3 months till 1 year). I lived on my own therefor my renting price was definitely higher than the average. I lived close to the victoria square which is a vived but not really nice looking place. A lot of drug dealing is going on in this surroundings but I would not rate this place as dangerous. But as a woman it could definitely make you feel umcomfortable. The good things is: It is close to the university ( 3min) and you have a direct metro connection to the M1 ( main Metro in Athens).

3. Academic life at host university

The academic culture is definitly different to what I am used to at WU. Every lesson starts 15 min later than scheduled because we people are used to beeing late. The Campus facilites are spread out to three different buildings but which are all close by each other. They differ between modern and rundown buildings. You can not expact the same quality of buildings and features as you have it at WU. Classes I can definitely recommend: Financial Management, Business economics, Start-up, Entrepreneurship.

5. Every day life in the host country

The public transport is really good. With the Metro you can get around the city without any difficulty. Athens is also a really nice city which you can go through just by walking. Concerning the saftey situation you will realize really fast that the poorness rate in Athens is higher than what we are used to in Vienna and that the infrastrucutre also affects the overall impression of the city. Everyday public processes just does not work that well, just as keeping the streets clean, working traffic lights or unfinished constructions. But despite that the people in Athens are mostly really friendly and calm even though they might seem suspicious on the first glance. I am highlighting that because around the area I was living you had a lot of drug dealing going on which attracted many strange looking people during the day. For me in the beginning it was like a cultural shock to see but it turned out to be totally fine. So be encouraged, even though you might feel weird in the beginning you will get used to it really fast. Just be nice and they will be too. Never really got into trouble except from one time in Exarchia because the living people their do not welcome tourist. At leasr some of them. But it is a nice area to be anyways.

6. Testimonial

The opportunities Athens provide such as easy access to island, party in town or beach, rooftop experience next to the Akropolis. Basically everything you would not see under normal circumstances. Also the way of living: staying up late, eating late starting in the day late. The mentality of living and the way of living differs so much to our social and cultural habits.
