1. Preparation

It’s easy and inexpensive to get there by night train, especially during off-peak hours. Book an apartment or room at least 4 months in advance, as affordable options are often already taken by then. The LUISS International Office is also very friendly and helpful.

2. Accommodation

It’s better to use Spotahome than HousingAnywhere, since HousingAnywhere won’t help you with any problems after you move in. There are lots of good rooms listed on Facebook. I found a shared apartment through HousingAnywhere right near Policlinico—a great, safe, and well-connected area—about a 20-minute walk to the law buildings, and 20 minutes by tram to the main campus. I highly recommend the area between the Policlinico and Bologna metro stations. Unfortunately, I ended up paying way too much—about 950 EUR all-in per month—because I was very picky about the neighborhood and started looking too late.

3. Academic life at host university

Very laid-back instructors; attendance is generally mandatory and strictly monitored via an app. The campus is very modern, etc.; the level is somewhat comparable to specialized seminars, etc. Highly recommended: Private International Law—great professor, and in the end, just a simple multiple-choice exam.

5. Every day life in the host country

LUISS has a great—though fee-based—sports program. Tennis and padel are very affordable through other providers. Public transportation to the university is decent, even if the buses and trams aren’t always reliable. For all sports activities, you need a Certificato Mediale, which you can have your family doctor in Austria issue in English, and it will most likely be accepted as is.
