I would make sure to arrange my visa, health insurance and accommodation well in advance. In particular, I would allow some extra time for the visa application, as the process can sometimes take longer than expected. I would also book my accommodation early and check that my insurance covers the whole exchange period.
I stayed at Sunway Belfield, near Chinatown. Finding accommodation was quite easy, and there are plenty of options in Kuala Lumpur. I also felt very safe there, as Kuala Lumpur is generally a very safe city. I would recommend choosing accommodation with good public transport connections and not too far from the university.
Course recommendations are a bit difficult because the courses offered in the summer semester can change from year to year, and there are often short-term changes. I took Management in Organizations, Public Policy and Economy, and Supply Chain Management. In general, the teaching was more interactive than at WU Vienna, with more presentations and active participation. The facilities were okay, but compared to WU they were rather old-fashioned and somewhat outdated.
for the entire exchange
Public transport is quite good, although I used Grab quite often because it is cheap and convenient. Kuala Lumpur felt very safe overall. There are plenty of restaurants, shopping malls, bars and other activities, so there is always something to do. I would especially recommend exploring the different areas of the city and taking trips outside Kuala Lumpur on the weekends. There are also many opportunities for sports and outdoor activities.
My exchange in Kuala Lumpur was a great experience and gave me the opportunity to experience a completely different culture and way of life. I especially enjoyed meeting people from all over the world, exploring Malaysia and travelling around Southeast Asia. The combination of studying abroad, discovering a new country and having so many new experiences made the exchange very special for me.
