I would recommend booking your flight to Singapore as early as possible, since prices rise quickly and a direct or one-stop connection makes arrival much easier after such a long trip. It also helps to arrive a few days before the semester starts to get over the jet lag, settle in and sort out practical things like a local SIM card and public transport. Apart from that, make sure your passport, insurance and entry documents are in order well ahead of departure.
I lived in an on-campus room, which you can apply for directly through NUS. Although places are limited, everyone in our group got one, so you can usually count on it. The location is very safe and close to all classes; my main tip is to choose a room with air conditioning.
NUS has an excellent campus with modern facilities, and the academic culture is noticeably more formal than at WU, with more continuous assessment and active class participation. In my Financial Markets course, for example, the rules were quite strict, including a business dress code for certain sessions. I can highly recommend Accounting for Decision Makers, which is essentially an accounting crash course for local non-business students but open to all exchange students.
for the entire exchange
Public transport in Singapore is excellent: the MRT and buses are clean, cheap and reliable, and you can simply tap in with your contactless bank card, while Singapore is also one of the safest cities I have ever been to. In terms of sports, table tennis is a big thing in the halls, although during the summer semester there were no regular sports clubs or university tournaments running. For leisure, the city offers plenty to explore, from hawker centres and nature parks to easy weekend trips across Southeast Asia.
My exchange at NUS was one of the most rewarding experiences of my studies, both academically and personally. Living on campus with students from all over the world quickly turned classmates into close friends. Singapore's energy and the chance to explore Southeast Asia on weekends made the semester truly unforgettable.
