1. Preparation

My exchange took place at EBS (Estonian Business School) in Tallinn, Estonia. The single most time-consuming part was navigating the dual challenge of securing accommodation and getting the learning agreement signed by all required parties. I was overly worried about arranging comprehensive insurance, which was ultimately straightforward. However, I underestimated the administrative stress and time required to finalize the learning agreement with my home university, however it was still very manageable.

2. Accommodation

I secured housing before arrival through the university-recommended option: Larsen Eduard House, a 15-minute free bus ride from the Old Town and EBS. The accommodation was a mix of a student dorm, long-term rental, and an all-inclusive rent model popular with tourists and students. Crucial tip: While convenient, this option is expensive. If you are coming with one or more friends, seeking a private apartment together is significantly cheaper and less complicated in the long run.

3. Academic life at host university

The teaching style at EBS was highly interactive and internationalized. My master-level courses with MBA content were particularly enriching, as they consistently integrated real-life case studies and practical, hands-on projects. The workload was manageable and primarily based on assignments, allowing flexibility to complete them according to your own work style. The use of digital tools was not only allowed but actively encouraged in all academic work. Overall, the administrative and academic support from the university was excellent.

5. Every day life in the host country

The most significant cultural adjustment was adapting to a quieter, more reserved public demeanor; people generally don't talk or smile at strangers on buses. I made friends through a combination of the university's intro week, classes, roommates in my residence, and events organized by ESN Tallinn. The essential life hack is to formally register your residence in Tallinn as soon as you can, as this grants you free public transportation within the city, saving a lot of money.
