1. Preparation

Start early and get familiar with the topic and the search for a suitable university.

2. Accommodation

The university provides a website where you can find all available accommodations with detailed information. In addition, there are YouTube videos for each accommodation in which students show the surrounding area as well as the inside of the accommodation. There are several types of accommodation. Some of them are apartments with your own flat, including a small kitchen, which are more expensive. Others are shared apartments with a shared bathroom and shared kitchen. I stayed at Raslätt, which is the largest student accommodation in Jönköping. I was very happy that I chose Raslätt because you meet the most people there. It is a 20 minute bike ride or a 15 minute bus ride to the university and therefore also to the city center. The accommodation consists of shared apartments, usually for two to three people. Only a handful of the apartments are for more than three people. It is a safe area with a supermarket and sports facilities right next door.

3. Academic life at host university

The campus is really small compared to WU, but it has a nice library and is very well located. The teaching style varies from course to course, but they really try to make it as interactive as possible. In some courses, the academic culture was noticeably weaker than at WU, and therefore the overall workload was comparatively low.

5. Every day life in the host country

Public transport is good, with many buses running frequently. The city is very safe. There are plenty of sports options offered by the university, but also many public football pitches and ice-skating areas in winter. I would also definitely recommend visiting games of the local ice hockey club. There are student discounts of mostly around 50% in student bars around the city center.

6. Testimonial

The semester in Jönköping was a really nice experience. It is a small and pleasant city, which is perfect for one semester. There are many opportunities for traveling, such as the university Lapland trip, as well as renting a car and going hiking in Norway or visiting the capitals Stockholm, Copenhagen, and Oslo. There are also cheap flights to the Baltic countries. The university organizes one event every Wednesday at its student club. Apart from that, there are a few bars that exchange students usually went to, where you can get cheap drinks and play darts or pool most of the time for free. I can definitely recommend Jönköping as a city for an exchange semester.
