1. Preparation

For the WU application process it is important to research about Argentina and Buenos Aires beforehand, and have specific interests in mind. Knowing some Spanish is also definitley helpful, and if you don’t speak it yet you should demonstrate your motivation to learn and practice it in the country. Regarding travel, book your flight as soon as possible to save money and I can recommend booking a round trip flight as this is again cheaper. You could also check flights to Montevideo (Uruguay) and take a boat from there to Buenos Aires, which may sometimes be more affordable. Also have an e-SIM ready for your arrival in Argentina. However, after a few days I recommend switching to Claro, the local mobile data provider.

2. Accommodation

I stayed in several Airbnbs during my entire stay, which worked well for me. However, if I were to do it again, I would just connect with other exchange students in the group chat made by Di Tella a couple of weeks/months before the exchange semester and find accommodation together with others. In terms of areas to live in, I would recommend Chacarita!!/Villa Crespo/Almagro/Palermo. All areas felt very safe and are great to live in. In the first weeks, all the exchange students will always meet in Palermo Soho to go out, and most students also live in that area. But after a couple of weeks, I noticed that many students get a bit bored from Palermo Soho and explore other barrios. You could also just book an Airbnb for the first weeks and then connect with other students over there and find something together.

3. Academic life at host university

Utdt is a private university with great campus facilities and teachers. The teaching style is very dynamic, with many in-class discussions and overall not the highest workload. The university also offers a variety of free sport courses, which are a great way to meet local students. Overall, I did, however, notice that the university itself is not very political, and also since the local students pay a very high tuition fee, the students are often from a similar "upper class" background. I would therefore recommend also trying to meet students that study at different universities such as the Universidad de Buenos Aires, to get a broader and perhaps more authentic image of Argentinian students. Regarding course selection, I would strongly recommend the course "Dictadura y Militancia Política: Los años 60 y 70 en el Cono Sur y sus efectos" which is taught in English. While the workload is relatively high for this course, the topic is really interesting and important to learn about, and this course really marked my exchange semester. In addition, I would also recommend the "Español, cultura e identidad" course to practice Spanish and learn about the Argentinian culture.

5. Every day life in the host country

Buenos Aires is an amazing city. The people are very friendly and the culture is very strong. There are so many things to do, such as going to museums, concerts, clubbing, football games, parks… The public transport mainly relies on buses, which come quite irregularly but still frequently enough. Besides, there are several subway lines which I really like. My personal favourite transportation is, however, Uber Moto, which is quite cheap and you get to sit on the back of a motorcycle and drive through the city. The city is also really safe and I never felt any danger at all. Just when going into big crowds, you should make sure of your belongings.

6. Testimonial

Overall, it was the best decision to go on exchange to Buenos Aires. I met so many amazing people, had a great time at university, and had the possibility to travel through many amazing parts of South America and explore so many new cultures. Most importantly, I was able to skip the cold and dark Viennese winter for a sunny and warm South American summer.
