1. Preparation

The only thing I had to prepare was my visa beforehand and all the documents I needed there in order to complete the visa process (you get the visa on-site). Even if you don't book accomodation beforehand, you can find one there but you will have to live in a hotel or an Airbnb for 10 days. My advice is to book it before you go there and as for travelling I can recommend you using Turkish Airlines (student discount + not really long layovers).

2. Accommodation

I was living in a dormitory provided by the univerisity, which had two advantages: really cheap (500 euros for 5 months and transportation from/to university for free). It's nothing special and I got lucky and I got a bedroom all to myself as usually there are two people in one bedroom. I would recommend you booking a residence as most of the exchange students stay there, there are also amazing facilities and relatively cheap for the things you get (300-400 euros per month). Some residences I would recommend are Invito and Novum.Other than that the I paid around 200 euros for private health insurance, 2000 euros for travelling and around 800 euros for the round trip from Europe to Kuala Lumpur.

3. Academic life at host university

Campus is really big, it has its pros and cons. Compared to WU, I would say the one in Malaysia is worse, but do not expect a lot as we just get a really nice campus as WU students and very little unis can beat our facilities. Courses I would recommend 100% are Investment Management and Financial Management with Siti Hawa Yusof. Throughout the semester it is relatively easy with midterms and projects, but I would advise you to sit and study for the last two weeks, as exams are way more difficult compared to the other tests throughout the semester.

5. Every day life in the host country

Taxis are incredibly cheap, but also the metro system is pretty good and I used both. I have not heard about safety problems with someone throughout my stay there but always think about it on the back of your mind. My advice is to travel as much as possible. Here is a list of where I managed to go from 31.10.2025 until 15.01.2026: Malaysia- Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Perhentian Islands, Borneo Island( Sandakan, Jungle Safari on Kinabatangan River) Hong Kong Indonesia- Jakarta, Bali Singapore Thailand- Bangkok, Hat Yai, Phatthalung, Phuket, Khao Sok National Park, Ko Samui, Ko Pha Ngan Taiwan- Taipei Vietnam- Ho Chi Minh

6. Testimonial

It was amazing. Something that no one said to me was that at first it is going to be hard, but don't worry- everyone is feeling exactly like you so just go with the flow and it will pass. The most special part was the people I met and the trips I did. Really my advice is just travel and be open to all invites for such experiences. If you have any questions about anything, do not hesitate to contact me as I know how it is to think of something and having no one to ask. Just send me a message. Enjoy :)
