1. Preparation

Before going on exchange I'd recommend to inform yourself a lot about the place you are going. For the US I'd recommend making an esim phone plan beforehand so that when you arrive you can use it immediately and also bring some adapters for the power outlets but be aware that some things (ex. hairdryer) might not work in the US because of the volt. Another tip don't buy the Emory insurance it is way too expensive and you can find a cheaper one. I bought my insurance on ISO student health insurance. There you can find insurances for students which are adapted to the school you are going. I traveled there by plane.

2. Accommodation

I found my accommodation on Facebook. Look up your school and then you can find many groups where people post their subleases or offer accommodation. I also made my own post where I said that I'm an incoming exchange student and that I'm looking for accommodation and many people contacted me and offered me something. I lived in a small house with 4 other Emory students and I had my own room and shared a bathroom with one other girl. The location was really good it was right next to Walmart and it had a bus stop of the Emory shuttle right in front of the house. I know many people chose to live on campus but it wasn't really hard to find something myself which was even cheaper and also better in my opinion.

3. Academic life at host university

First of the campus offers many different facilities which students can use. Regarding sports there is a huge gym at the main campus with a large swimming pool indoor and a smaller gym at the residence campus with an outdoor pool. They also have a huge outdoor running field and offer different sport courses / classes during the week. The campus also offers different dining halls but I only tried one but it was really good and the price was good as well. Next the campus has many different libraries and study locations you can use and also offers great outdoor spaces where you can spend your time and enjoy the weather. Another thing I thought was really good was the Emory shuttle. They offer a shuttle which is free for all students and takes you to different places, especially if you don't have a car this is really helpful. The only thing is that they only run on weekdays. Regarding academic culture I feel like Emory students are very smart and very motivated to get the best out of themselves. I also could notice that they really aim to be the best in your class. The teaching style is very different compared to WU. The courses are way smaller and the professors have a closer and more familiar relationship with their students and in general classes are held very interactive and mostly like a discussion. I have to say for me personally classes at Emory were way easier than at WU but I also chose only classes in which I was interested in and the ones which weren't to hard. If you're interested in Marketing I can definitely recommend the courses they have especially Content Marketing or Digital and Social Media Strategy.

5. Every day life in the host country

Everyday life at Emory was great. As I mentioned before Emory offers a free shuttle you can take to get to places also Atlanta offers their public transport called Marta. It's not too bad I also took it sometimes but I wouldn't recommend taking it at night but other than that it's fine and it's also cheap but in general be prepared that you'll spend a lot of money on Uber just because it's really hard to get to places without a car. The area around Emory is very safe. Many times also I walked home at night and I never had a bad feeling or situation so it's definitely a good area. Regarding social and leisure activities if you like to party Emory itself doesn't really have a big party culture the students there mostly go to bars or clubs. There will be some frat parties you could go to but to be honest I didn't really like them and it's also more for younger people who are not 21 yet but if you are over 21 you can definitely go out to bars / clubs. The area offers great bars where many students go to. Another thing is that the business school has events every week where they offer drinks and free food and it's kinda like a small get together and it's always a great time. Other than that Emory in general has many different social events where you can go to. Regarding sports there is a huge gym and recreation centre you can use and as far as I know you could also join a sport club if you wanted to.

6. Testimonial

My exchange semester definitely was the best time of my life and was a great experience. I got to know so many new people and was able to live a completely different life compared to home. You also get a great chance to travel around the US because domestic flights are really cheap and you're pretty close to the airport. I can definitely recommend everybody to do an exchange semester and if you don't know where you want to go Emory is definitely a great choice. Even though it's a smaller school and you might think there is not too much going on but you will have the best time of your life anyway.
