Exchange Report

When preparing for the exchange semester, I strongly recommend getting in touch with fellow exchange students before departure. Attending pre-departure meetups ("Stammtische") and connecting early makes a huge difference, ensuring you don't feel isolated during the first few days and allowing you to build friendships before arriving on campus. For travel to campus, taking a direct bus from Chicago to Champaign-Urbana is a very convenient and cost-effective option; it costs around $60 and drops you off directly near campus. Additionally, make sure to keep all your visa documentation organized and easily accessible in your carry-on luggage to ensure a smooth and quick entry process upon arrival in the U.S.

My roommates and I found our accommodation through the pre-departure meetups ("Stammtische") in Vienna. Former UIUC exchange students connected us with a landlord, which made the entire process quick and straightforward. In the end, four of us exchange students from Vienna shared a private apartment located right on campus. The area felt very safe, even when returning home late at night. My primary advice for future exchange students is to look for an apartment close to Green Street and the main campus area so that everything is within comfortable walking distance. Public transportation in Champaign-Urbana is not as comprehensive or reliable as the public transit system in Vienna, so living central makes everyday life much easier.

Campus life at UIUC is incredibly vibrant and offers a wide array of activities, including access to world-class athletic facilities like ARC (the main campus gym) and countless student clubs to join. College sports play a massive role in campus culture, and attending live games is an absolute highlight of the student experience. Compared to WU Vienna, the academic culture and teaching style are noticeably different. Classes feel much more personal, even in large lecture halls, and active class participation is heavily emphasized. Rather than having your final grade depend almost entirely on one end-of-semester exam, the grading system at UIUC is spread out over regular homework assignments, midterms, and in-class participation. Regarding course recommendations, I highly suggest taking ADV 150 (Introduction to Advertising), which easily transfers back to WU for Marketing credits, as well as BADM 375 (Operations Strategy), which serves as a great equivalent for BLP.

Everyday life in Champaign is very accessible and welcoming. Public transportation (the local bus system) is completely free for all UIUC students in Champaign and the surrounding area. However, students also rely heavily on Uber, simply because it is often much faster and more convenient for getting around. Regarding safety, I always felt completely secure both on and off campus. Socially, it is very easy to get involved and integrate. There are numerous welcome events and activities specifically designed for exchange students, making it easy to connect right from the start. A major part of the leisure culture is sports; you have the opportunity to join a wide variety of club or intramural sports teams. I personally joined an intramural soccer team, which was incredibly fun and a fantastic way to meet lots of new people outside of the classroom.

My exchange semester at UIUC was an unforgettable experience filled with amazing people and lifelong friendships. I formed especially strong bonds with my fellow WU students as we shared the unique experience of adapting to campus life together. A absolute highlight of the semester was our Spring Break trip to Fort Lauderdale, which made the whole journey truly special.
