1. Preparation

It is recommended to start preparing for the exchange semester as early as possible.Booking flights early can also help reduce travel costs. Regarding accommodation, the housing search was straightforward in my semester. Nevertheless, it is still advisable to start looking early. If you are going to Michigan for the Winter semester, make sure to pack appropriate winter clothing.

2. Accommodation

would recommend subleasing an apartment from a University of Michigan student. Before the semester starts, exchange students receive access to a shared Excel sheet via email where they can indicate that they are looking for accommodation and also see which Michigan students are going abroad and are offering their apartments for sublease. I found this to be the easiest and most convenient way to find accommodation. My apartment was located about a 15-minute walk from campus, which was very convenient for attending classes and participating in student life. Overall, I had a very positive accommodation experience and did not encounter any major difficulties during the housing search.

3. Academic life at host university

The academic environment at the University of Michigan is very engaging, and the strong school spirit creates a unique atmosphere on campus. Exchange students are quickly integrated and have access to the same academic and extracurricular opportunities as regular students. The university also offers a wide range of student organizations. In particular, there are many finance clubs, and I joined one during my semester. It was a great opportunity to meet other students and attend networking events and company presentations.

5. Every day life in the host country

Public transportation in Ann Arbor is free for students with the M-Card and makes it easy to get around the city. I mainly used the bus whenever I did not want to walk. For sports, I trained at the Intramural Sports Building (IM), which is available free of charge to all students. I found the gym to be well equipped and more than sufficient for everyday training. There are also many sporting events throughout the semester. I attended several basketball games, and ticket prices of around $30 per game were, in my opinion, very reasonable for the overall experience.

My exchange semester at the University of Michigan was an unforgettable experience, both academically and personally. The combination of a vibrant campus life, excellent academic opportunities, and the strong school spirit made it a truly unique experience. One of the highlights was traveling with other exchange students throughout the semester, which created many unforgettable memories and made the exchange even more special.
