Tip 1: Start the visa process as early as possible and keep an eye out for updates, it can really take a long time. For visa payments and general expenses, I recommend getting a credit card (with no transaction fees). Tip 2: Book your flight early Tip 3: Look for apartments, we lived at Sunway Belfield; other well-known are Invito and KL Gateway. Tip 4: Check and get your vaccinations Tip 5: Bring required medication. If included in Malaysia's Poisons Act request a doctor's letter confirming your prescription.
- Finding accommodation was difficult, we requested many short-term leases (6 months) and most were denied. Kept applying quantity>quallity - We stayed in a private apartment near Merdeka 118 in the city centre - The was felt very safe, with in-house security - Around 10 minutes by taxi to campus ~3€, (usually shared). Public transport or walking > 1h - Good to know beforehand: public transport is only practical if you and destination is near a station.
Campus facilities: Big campus big, offers two cheap main cafeterias (1-4€), a few coffee shops and restaurants, one supermarket, vending machines Academic Culture: Focusses more on community activities - sports, craft, movie night, no spritzerstand Teaching style: Less interactive and at times a bit chaotic, teachers love to interact with exchange students Course Recommendation: Public Policy - EIA2010; Theories of Management and Oragnisation - VIA 1002; Leadership - CIB3005
for the entire exchange
- Puplic transport into the city was alright for us as we lived close to the merdeka 118 MRL Station. - I always felt safe in Kuala Lumpur or in other Malaysian cities. General high security presence at public events and in malls. - A variety of events were organised at the start of Uni in Ramadan season, many sporting evetents - Voleyball, Football and Running - no real strenght training. Thus a friend of mine and me got a gym mebership (~45€/month) in a nearby mall, also available climbing & boulder, hyrox - City continuously organises events and festivals - Student WA Groups post Bar-, Clubbing events - Nearby chinatown offerede many food and coffee options we often enjoyed. - Car free sunday - City closes towndown streets for running.
Malaysia offers a very different culture to europe. Navigating that environment really challenges the previously know way of thinking and acting. Overall I had a very good experience meeting many new friends, traveling arround and enjoying good food:)
