1. Preparation

1. Book in advance if you travel by train or fly to Eindhoven to get a better price. 2. Look for accomodation early 3. Do some research about the surrounding areas (for travels) and the culture

2. Accommodation

I lived in a shared apartment with one other girl, since I didn't get a room in the student residence. I lived in the Lauwerecht area, which was very close to the city centre. It was about 5–10 minutes away from my lecture locations and about 25 minutes from the Science Park by bike. I felt very safe in this area. Tips: Start looking early. Check alternative websites, such as HousingAnywhere, Airbnb, or other student accommodations not provided by the university. If you search on Facebook, be aware of scams and be careful.

3. Academic life at host university

My faculty had different locations, which made it a little harder at the beginning to find the right place. The campus is well equipped. I especially liked the library at the Science Park and the dining hall at the International Campus for doing group projects or grabbing a quick coffee or snack. The only thing I was missing was a good Mensa, so I would recommend packing lunch if you don’t have time to go back home or to a restaurant. The academic culture is less focused on grades compared to WU, and the teaching style is more personal. Lectures focus strongly on discussions and encourage students to think critically and participate. Working in groups and the exchange between students were also emphasized. The workload per course and per ECTS was lower, and in my opinion the course materials were less organized and clear compared to WU. I can recommend the course Essentials of Entrepreneurship, as it is very hands-on.

5. Every day life in the host country

I mainly used my bike to get around the city and took the train for longer trips. I can recommend getting the OV-Chipkaart if you plan on traveling across the Netherlands. I always felt very safe in the city and the surrounding areas, but make sure to lock your bike properly. There are many activities and events organized by the university. Since the inhabitants of the city are very young and mainly students, you will always find something fun to do. The proximity to Amsterdam and other big cities is also very convenient and definitely worth taking advantage of. On campus, there are many sports options and student associations. I personally joined the squash club and really enjoyed it.

6. Testimonial

Overall, my exchange experience was very enriching and greatly broadened my horizons. The highlight for me was definitely meeting wonderful people from all over the world and forming new friendships. I also really enjoyed the university environment and had the opportunity to further improve my language skills.
